Shawnee Community College to Host SIFTC Event for Area High School Students

 

ULLIN, IL (March 18, 2024) – Nearly 300 high school students from 16 area schools are expected to attend the upcoming Southern Illinois Future Teacher Coalition event on Thursday, March 21, from 8:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

Shawnee Community College is hosting SIFTC at SCC, which will include students from Anna-Jonesboro, Carterville, Cobden, Dongola, Eldorado, West Frankfort, Goreville, Harrisburg, Herrin, Johnston City, Joppa, Marion, Massac County, Meridian, Shawnee, and Vienna High Schools.

This year’s theme is Empowering Tomorrow’s Teachers: Inspire, Educate, Lead. Students will compete in campaigns to promote education and help fight the teacher shortage nationwide and in southern Illinois.

The Southern Illinois Future Teachers Coalition (SIFTC) is a partnership between John A. Logan College, Shawnee Community College, Southern Illinois University, the Illinois State Board of Education, and 20 southern Illinois high schools.

SIFTC is working to address the teacher shortage in southern Illinois by providing targeted programming at the local level.
