ULLIN, IL (August 26, 2025) – Shawnee Community College Workforce Development is proud to announce an all-day training event, Communication Strategies for Diverse Abilities, on Saturday, September 27, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Zion Evangelical Church in Metropolis, Illinois.
The interactive workshop will be facilitated by Hadley Stephens, founder of Rolling in Faith, and Kayla Etheridge, American Sign Language Instructor. Together, they will guide participants through strategies to build stronger communication skills for engaging with individuals of all abilities.
Attendees will gain:
- Introductory experience in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Practical techniques for communicating with people who are Deaf or hard of hearing
- Respectful approaches for engaging with individuals with intellectual or physical disabilities
“This workshop is designed for individuals and businesses who want to improve their communication skills and create more inclusive spaces,” said Melissa Luttenbacher, Director of Shawnee Community College Workforce Development. “Participants will leave with practical tools they can immediately apply in their workplaces and communities.”

About the Facilitators
Hadley Stephens founded Rolling in Faith after recognizing the need for spaces where people with disabilities are seen, known, and valued. With a background in Nonprofit Leadership and Special Education, she oversees programs that build community, connection, and purpose for individuals of all abilities.
Kayla Etheridge is an experienced educator entering her 15th year of teaching. She previously taught at the Illinois School for the Deaf, deepening her passion for American Sign Language and advocacy for the Deaf Community. She brings her commitment and joy for language learning to every classroom.
