A Journey of Contemporary African American Artists - Jan. 27th
This is your invitation to a presentation for A Journey of
Contemporary African American Artists, in the Atrium at Shawnee
College, on January 27, 2012, at 10:00 am. This will include a
Powerpoint presentation of artworks by DeSande R, Najjar
Abdul-Musawwir, Robert Ketchens, David Crim, and Malcolm McCrae; a
discussion about the artists; and a question-and-answer session. All
students, instructors, and staff members are invited to the
presentation.
You are also invited to the reception for the artists at 7:00 pm on
the same night. The reception will include music, catered
refreshments, and an opportunity to interact with the artists. The

SAINTS READ Program Submission Deadline Set - Jan. 31st
SCC announces that the reading logs for the SAINTS READ Literacy Program are due by January 31st. This reading program asks that students in grades K-6 keep a reading log for two months verifying that they have met their reading goals appropriate for their grade level. Teachers and parents are to verify the forms and return them to Sharon Walker at Shawnee Community, Ullin IL.

Don Patton Speaks at MLK Luncheon
Shawnee Community College welcomed alumni, community members, along with TRIO Student Support Services students to a luncheon celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s journey on January 17. Don E. Patton, long-time SCC board member and current board chairman who spoke to the group, reminding them of the urgency of now. Patton said, "you owe it to yourself to make this your year. Don't allow people to limit you."

Online Professional Development for Teachers
Shawnee Community College is offering an online professional development opportunity for area educators this spring. The 3 hour course, which is worth 45 CPDUs, is a study of special education issues that all educators may encounter. The course is repeatable up to 3 times. Each semester different issues will be addressed.

Chinese Acrobats Return to SCC for Performance
The Chinese acrobat performance last week was attended by students
from several area schools. The event was sponsored by the Shawnee
Community College TRIO Educational Talent Search program. The TRIO
Educational Talent Search Program is an academic outreach program
designed to provide educational guidance to students in 6th grade up
to 27 years of age, who wish to pursue further education or training. |

Early Childhood Education Options at SCC
Shawnee Community College's two-year Early Childhood Education program leads to an Associate in Applied Science degree. The program curriculum provides students with the background in child development and general studies necessary for a career as a paraprofessional/teacher assistant in Pre-K and school-age programs.

The Illinois Small Business Development Center at Shawnee Community College promotes and supports business growth and development in the southernmost region of Illinois. The center is excited to announce another growth tool for the region. The addition of a new business & industry training center in February 2011 has opened the doors to many other opportunities.

Commit to Complete at Shawnee
The Alpha Lambda Epsilon chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa international honor society at Shawnee Community College recently held several "Pledge to Completion" signings on campus, as part of a national PTK movement for community colleges called Community College Completion Corps.
"PTK members at Shawnee are committed to doing their part to encourage fellow students to commit to complete," said Craig Bradley, PTK faculty sponsor at SCC. "So far, more than 130 signatures have been collected at our pledge signings, and more signings are being planned throughout the year."

The Results are In: Cook Off Winners
The Professional Development Committee recently hosted the annual SCC Chili and Dessert Cook Off. Faculty and staff sampled the entries and voted for their top choice.
First place winners for chili, Chris Clark, and for dessert, Madonna Slife, each received $25 cash, cook off winner apron, and bragging rights until next year.

SCC Has Pink Out
SCC faculty, staff, and students came together for a group photo as
part of the Wellness/Cultural Committe Pink Out. The event was
organized to show support and commitment to fighting breast cancer.
October was Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Lisa Meyer, pictured second from the left, took home the $25 cash
prize for the being the pinkest.

Phi Theta Kappa International Induction at Shawnee
The Alpha Lambda Epsilon chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa international honor society at Shawnee Community College recently conducted an induction ceremony, welcoming new members.
While not a requirement for membership, being formally inducted as a member of the Honor Society is a very special, once-in-a-lifetime experience. During the Induction Ceremony, students took the Honor Society pledge, signed the official Chapter Members book, and celebrated their academic achievements with fellow Phi Theta Kappa members, faculty and staff, friends, and family members.

Saints Read Literacy Program Launched at SCC
K-6 students in the SCC district are invited to take part in the Saints Read Program sponsored by Future Teachers Organization and the SCC athletic department. Area principals have been mailed reading logs to distribute to each elementary student. Students are asked to meet reading goals appropriate for their grade for two months. Verification must be documented on a reading log and returned to SCC through classroom teachers.

Pattons, Belcher Join the Race for the Cure
The Susan G. Komen "Race for the Cure Series," raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship, and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. On October 15, over 30,000 survivors and supporters gathered for the Komen Race flagship event in Dallas, Texas. Among the participants were Karla Patton of Cairo and her husband Don E. Patton, who serves as Shawnee Community College's Board of Trustee Chairman. Joining the Pattons in the celebration was fellow board member Cathy Belcher of Anna.

Art Club Tours Southern Illinois Museums
Members of the SCC Art Club visited the Cedarhurst Museum in
Mt. Vernon and the Southern Illinois Art and Artisans Center in
Whittington in October. Mike Faris is the club sponsor. SCC awards art

Area High School Seniors Visit SCC
Nearly 500 areas high school seniors attended the annual SCC Day at Shawnee Community College on Tuesday, October 11. SCC Day began with a general welcome in the gymnasium. Students broke out into separate into groups to participate in various activities throughout the day. Motivational speaker Rich Wolter spoke to the group using humorous illustrations, powerful insights, and charismatic delivery, telling students that all young people have to stand and be counted and that generations are either remembered for their passion, or forgotten for their lack of passion.

SCC President Announces Retirement Plans in 2012 The SCC Board accepted the resignation of Dr. Larry Peterson, effective November 30, 2012. The board will honor his wishes to do so.
During his tenure, Dr. Peterson improved communications and programs
with SIU Carbondale and developed the new location for the Anna
Extension Center.
The board will undertake a thoughtful and comprehensive process for
the presidential search in the near future. Details will be
forthcoming. During this time, SCC will continue to strive for the
best educational experience for our students, faculty, staff, and
administration.

Dance and Drum Troupe from the
Republic of Senegal, Africa Performs at SCC
Students from area schools and agencies, joined SCC staff, faculty,
and students for a performance of a dance and drum troupe from the
Republic of Senegal, Africa. The group performance included songs,
folktales, drumming, and concluded with audience members joining the
group on stage.

Hands-on Reptile Education Drives Conservation Message
Snakes. The word, the thought makes many folks cringe. But few people realize how valuable snakes and their amphibian cousins are to the ecosystem of Southern Illinois. They are also a valuable raw material to medicine and will likely be in other fields of study yet to have been considered. This is the message that Tony Gerard, Biology Instructor at Shawnee Community College, drives home when he brings snakes, turtles, and exhibits to educate local children.

Celebrating Young Writers at Shawnee
High School students throughout the Shawnee Community College district are invited to participate in a writing contest sponsored by the college. Celebrating Young Writers will recognize the literary skills of area high school students in three categories: short fiction, poetry, and non-fiction essay. Original work will be judged by college faculty in two divisions: 9th/10th grade and 11th/12th grade. The submission deadline is Friday, February 17, 2012. There is no entry fee.
