Job Description
Job Title: Professional Tutor (part-time up to 29 hours per week)
Department: Student Success Services
Reports To: Student Success Center Coordinator
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
SUMMARY Student Success Center professional tutors provide academic support to the College’s students through one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions in subjects in which the tutor is hired to support. Tutors facilitate learning and serve as a guide and coach to assist the student to become a successful independent learner. The purpose of tutoring is to increase and enhance mastery of concepts or applications of a specific course of study.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Represent the College in the most positive manner with prospective, former and current students, clients, suppliers and the community we serve.
Interacts effectively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students and other customers of service, learns and uses operating practices of the department at the College.
Uphold the College’s mission statement.
Attend trainings and professional development opportunities as needed.
Tutor students in specific course material and integrate study skills and learning strategies to promote independent learning. Discuss skills and strategies such as: time management, study strategies, and navigating the College environment.
Keep and maintain regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions using the appropriate forms in the Student Success Center.
Develop good understanding and knowledge of College services, support, and resources. Research and share student resources such as Moodle, Purdue OWL, and MySCC student portal.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Required – Bachelor’s Degree English, mathematics or science.
Preferred – Master’s Degree in English, mathematics or science.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Minimum language ability associated with this job:
Reading: Ability to read procedural manuals and technical journals.
Writing: Ability to prepare business letters and reports using a prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
Speaking: Ability to make group and individual presentations about the college’s educational programs and services. Speak extemporaneously on a variety of subjects related to departmental work processes.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Proficiency in using a calculator to solve mathematical problems and the ability to give directions on how to manipulate at least one commonly used graphics calculator (TI83/84 or TI89 preferred)
· Proficiency in at least one area of mathematics offered by SCC (Beginning Algebra is a minimum requirement).
· Classes tutored include classes ranging in rigor from Beginning Algebra to classes such as Statistics, College Algebra, or Trigonometry.

Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Talking is required in activities in which the employee must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other employees accurately.
Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds with no less than a 40 db loss @ 500 Hz, 1,000Hz, and 2,000 Hz with or without correction. Hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communication.
Repetitive Motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
