Course Description:

This course includes topics in mathematics that are frequently encountered in many vocational areas.  It is specifically designed for students in nursing programs.  The topics covered include fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, percents, metric measurements, and ratios and proportions.  Nursing students will not be allowed to use calculators in this course.  The majority of this course will be devoted to real problems from pharmacology.

Course Objectives:

During this course the student should develop manual arithmetic manipulative skills.  He/she should also develop a conceptual foundation that will allow the student to apply his/her skills toward solving "real world" problems.  He/she should achieve competence in the following topic areas:

a.  reducing fractions

b.  operations on fractions and mixed numbers

c.  decimals

d.  operations on decimals

e.  operations on percents

f.  arithmetic vocabulary associated with fractions, decimals, and percents

g.  arithmetic vocabulary associated with equations, and ratio and proportions

h.  ratio and proportion

i.  solving proportions

j.  metric measurements

k.  applied problems

Instructional Modes:

1.  Lecture/discussion (primary mode)

2.  Homework

3.  Supplementary materials, individual tutoring, etc. may be used as needed.

Student Expectations:

            4.  Be prepared for exams over assigned material.  Take tests at regularly                                       scheduled times unless extenuating circumstances interfere.  Quizzes may be                        announced or unannounced.

Student Evaluation:

1.  Three or more hour exams, each worth 100 points, will be given.

2.  A comprehensive final, worth 200 points, will be given.

Resource Materials

There are special materials available in the LAC for students needing help in certain

areas.  Math software over many areas covered by the textbook is available.  This

software will enable the student to work at his/her own pace and provide needed practice

of math principles.  Also, some reference books on nursing mathematics are available,

for example, Logical Nursing Mathematics by Bruce Wilson, RN, MSN and Medications

and Mathematics for the Nurse, 6E by Jane Rice, RN, CMA-C and Ester Shelley.

Note:   The above schedule and procedures in this course are subject to change in the event of extenuating circumstances.
