Specific Course Description:

 

Principles and practices of establishing and operating a business are presented, including opportunities, hazards, and problems which might be encountered.  Fundamental considerations, planning, organizing, actuating and controlling management application of principles and techniques to all activities.

Course Objectives:

 

After completing BUS 128 – Introduction to Management, the student will be able to do the following:

 

A.                 investigate and evaluate business opportunities using techniques learned in this course and this will be demonstrated by situation analysis.

 

B.                 list skills and knowledge areas needed to establish a new firm.

 

C.                 Describe the marketing process for products and then for services.

 

D.                Demonstrate how to manage human resources in a business – list techniques in handling employees—motivating, disciplining, hiring, firing, etc.

 

E.         illustrate the fiscal demands of a business by completing basic financial statements.

 

E.                 describe, and show by example, how to meet the organization’s social responsibility to the community.

Student Expectations:

 

The Student should expect the instructor to be prepared and have instructional resources identified and available.  It is expected that the student comes to the class with the desire to learn and determination to complete the material for the grade.

 

 

Student Evaluation:

 

The following components make up the student’s final grade:

 

Unit Tests—700 Points

Final Exam—100 Points

Business Plan—100 Points

Chapter Quizzes—240 Points

Web-Exercises—240 Points

Situation Analysis – 240 Points

Attendance—30 Points

Total Points – 1650 Points Available

 

Unit Tests—700 Points:  The following break is used for the testing:  1-4; 5-7; 8-11; 12-14; 15-17; 18-21; 22-24.

 

Final Exam—100 Points:  Basic content and format of this exam will be determined later.

 

Business Plan—100 Points:  Students are  expected  to prepare a basic business plan and present  information to the class.  Students will have a hard copy of the plan and will do a short presentation on the plan.

 

Chapter Quizzes—240 Points:  24 chapters – each chapter is worth 10 points.  Go to  http://longenecker.swcollege.com to access the quizzes.  If it asks you to submit to your instructor use – sharonr@shawneecc.edu as my address.

 

Web Exercises—240 Points:  24 chapters – each chapter is worth 10 points.  There are URL’s listed at the end of each chapter under the section – “exploring the Web’.  You can access one of these and then write me a paragraph or so on what you find.  The URL above may have Internet sites you can visit which relate to that chapter.

 

Situation Analysis—240 Points:  24 chapters – each chapter is worth 10 points.  At the end of each chapter you have a section called ‘You make the call’.  Choose one of the Situations described and answer the questions posed – on paper – can key and send to me as an e-mail or attachment.

 

Attendance—30 Points:  These points will be pro-rated.  We will have 45 attendance days – more or less.  This means you get about a point a day for attendance. 

 

Point Division for Grade:

 

1485 to 1650 Points = A

1320  to 1484 Points = B

1155 to 1319 Points = C

990 to 1154 Points = D

Below 990 Points = F

 

 

 

Office Hours: 

Office hours will be posted on the bulletin board outside the instructor’s office.  Other times are possible by scheduling individual appointments at mutually convenient hours.  Students are encouraged to consult regularly with the instructor regarding class progress or other topics of concern.

 

 

Inclement Weather Policy:

Become familiar with the inclement weather policy of Shawnee Community College.  It will be read in all classes and posted in the cafeteria or student lounge.

 

 

Academic Dishonesty or Plagiarism:

Review the college policy regarding academic dishonesty in the Student Handbook.

College Policy:

Administrative policy prohibits the following:  eating, drinking, or using tobacco in the classroom; bringing children or other unauthorized individuals to the classroom.

 

 

Attendance Policy:

Each student is expected to attend all class meetings.  The student is expected to be on time and ready to begin class with the proper materials at the beginning of each class period.
