This web site
is dedicated to the growers, vintners and students of the Greater
Shawnee region to foster and promote this fledgling industry. Our goal is
to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and to share current information
pertaining to best agricultural practices for vineyards. This site will be a clearinghouse
for available equipment, supplies, vines and marketing information. Below you will find
“Local Vineyards Connected…” for anyone wishing to post questions, seek advice, search for equipment
and other related topics. Additionally, the “What’s New” section can be used to post news worthy items
such as an open house, entertainment functions, educational programs, visits by the state Viticulturist,
a new variety grown with success and related items.
In response to the growing interest
and rebirth of the grape and wine industry in the state of Illinois, Shawnee Community
College formed a small group in 1997 to explore ways the college could meet its educational
needs and foster economic development. As part of this effort, the college has organized an
academic program in the form of a one-semester certificate, to train and inform the owner\entrepreneurial
population of this region. The purpose of this viticulture program is to train individuals at all
levels to become owner-operators and practitioners who will excel in the growing and production of
high quality grapes. The small business center at the college offers one-on-one counseling for
the new and/or existing business owners and managers. Additionally, assistance is given on developing
business and marketing plans, e-commerce and information on federal, state, and local business loans.
