Online Student Assessment Testing:
Shawnee Community College policy requires all new students to complete entrance assessment testing.
Students living near the college campus should make arrangements to take the COMPASS or ASSET test at the main campus or one of the regional extension centers.
Students not living near the college will need to contact their local community college and arrange to take that college’s assessment test. Once completed, the testing officer should forward an official copy of the test results to the address below.
Shawnee Community College will follow the minimum scores as per our college policy. If the student takes a placement test at a location other than Shawnee College, and that college does not administer COMPASS or ASSET testing, SCC will acknowledge the minimum scores required of the college where the test was taken. Therefore, the testing officer will need to enclose a copy of that college’s minimum score policy.
What is Assessment Testing?
The Compass Test
Compass
is a computerized form of placement testing developed by ACT. COMPASS (Computer-adapted
Placement Assessment and Support Services) is an un-timed test that adjusts
to your level in reading, writing and math.
You
do not need computer experience to take this test. You may bring a calculator
or use the graphing calculator built in to the software. The following
calculators are not allowed: Pocket organizers, Handheld or laptop computers,
Electronic writing pads or pen-input devices, Models with a QWERTY (typewriter)
keypad, Models with built-in capability to simplify algebraic expressions,
multiply polynomials, or factor polynomials such as CFX-9970G, TI-89,
and TI-92.
Your
test results will be printed immediately upon completion of the test
and you may retest at that time in any area in which you feel you could
do better. Although the test is un-timed, it takes approximately two
(2) hours to complete.
The Asset Test
The
Asset test is a paper/pencil placement test developed by ACT. It has three
components which measure your ability in reading, writing and math. This
test is taken to the area high schools for pre-enrollment. This test is timed
at 25 minutes for each category of reading, writing and math areas. Calculators
are allowed in the intermediate algebra portion of this test only. You will
be allowed to retest one time only, after two weeks.
Test results should be sent to:
Admissions Office

Next you must schedule an advisement session.
