First President's Golf Invitational
Friends of Shawnee Community College gathered at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau as founding supporters of the first SCC’s President’s Golf Invitational on Monday. Proceeds from the event will provide scholarships to students from across the SCC district.

The Saints Return
Saints Kyle Williamson and D.D. Gillespie have inherited the task of leading the SCC men’s basketball team in the 2009-10 season. Under the leadership of coach John Sparks, Williamson and Gillespie and their freshmen teammates take to the court later this fall.

Rejuvenating Facelift Massage Certification Seminar at SCC
Shawnee Community College is sponsoring a continuing education seminar for Massage Therapists. The two-day Rejuvenating Facelift Massage certification program will be presented by Rita Woods, NCTNB, LMT.
The seminar will be on Saturday, November 7th, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, November 8th, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the SCC River Room located on the main campus near Ullin. Seminar participants will earn 12 CEUs. The cost of the two-day seminar is $250, which includes 12 CEUs, one college credit and all class materials.

Shane "Bear on the Air" Parker Returns to SCC
Shawnee Community College alumnus Shane "Bear on the Air" Parker winces comically as Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Damon T. Arnold gave the radio and TV personality a seasonal flu shot. Arnold recently visited the SCC main campus along with local Illinois Department of Public Health officials to encourage Illinoisans to follow the 3 C’s - Clean, Cover, Contain. Parker is a former SCC Alumnus of the Year.

Patton Appointed to Funding Task Force
Longtime Shawnee Community College Board of Trustees Member Don Patton has been appointed to a task force on Illinois Community College System Funding.
The committee is charged with studying the impact that the present funding system for community colleges has on both regional and racial diversity in the Illinois community college system today.Only two community college trustees will serve. As a trustee, Patton keeps a close eye on how community colleges are impacted politically. Here, he is pictured outside the nation's capitol during a recent visit to Washington, D.C.

Saints Volleyball Deliver Early
with an 11-2 Record

The Lady Saints volleyball team boosted a winning 2008 season with 22 wins and 17 losses. Impressive, but when the 2009 season began in August, it was evident that the team wanted to tip the scales.
Just two weeks into the 2009 season, the team has racked up 11 wins from their 13 matches.

Washington's Past and Present to Raise Money for SCC Scholarships
Two great congressmen representing Washington's past and present will join Shawnee Community College in October to raise money for student scholarships.
U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello (D-Belleville, left) will be the keynote speaker and retired U.S. Rep. Ken Gray (right) will be a special guest during the first annual President's Scholarship Dinner to be held at the Gambit Golf Club in Vienna on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.

Higher Education Honors Harry L. Crisp II
The Southern Illinoisan sponsored 'Higher Education Night' at the Du Quoin State Fair Saturday night. Area community colleges and Southern Illinois University Carbondale were able to display to fairgoers why the region has some of the greatest higher education opportunities in the nation.

The 2009 Fall Musical Production of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" will run November 4th through the 7th. Auditions were held over Labor Day weekend and the cast announced September 8th.
