Celebrating Young Writers at Shawnee

High School students throughout the Shawnee Community College district were recently honored as participants in a writing contest sponsored by the college. Celebrating Young Writers recognized the literary skills of area high school students in three categories: short fiction, poetry and research essay. Winners were invited to read their entries during the reception at the college. There were over 250 entries from 127 student area students.

Winners received $100 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd place; $25 for 3rd place, with honorable mentions receiving $25 gift cards.

Poetry 9th/10th Division

  • 1st place: "The Storm" by Robert Gearheart, Cobden High School
  • 2nd Place: "Snowman" by Kacey Morris, Century High School
  • 3rd Place: "The Reject Girl" by Sara Grubb, Cobden High School
  • Honorable Mention: "Swings" by Stephanie Schroeder, Massac County High School

Poetry 11th/12th Division

  • 1st Place: "The Inability to Remain Grounded" by Beau Wright, Goreville High School
  • 2nd Place: "A Child's Story" by Zeb Johnson, Anna-Jonesboro High School
  • 3rd Place: "Where I'm From" by Shaneka Booth, Cairo High School
  • Honorable Mention: "The Storm" by Sarah Frankland-Searby, Anna-Jonesboro High School

Short Fiction 9th/10th Grade Division

  • 1st Place: "The Memories" by Sara Grubb, Cobden High School
  • 2nd Place: "Puppet Master" by Casper Eleam, Massac County High School
  • 3rd Place: "Family" by Morgan Lewis, Goreville High School
  • Honorable Mention: "Mr. Linden's Library" by Katilyn Troutt, Massac County High School

Short Fiction 11th/12th Grade Division

  • 1st Place: "Spirit of Washington" by Daniel Kerley, Vienna High School
  • 2nd Place: "Life is Like a Box of Chocolates" by Emily Jacobs, Massac County High School
  • 3rd Place: "excerpt 'The Life and Adventures of Captain Jaque Florence'" by Kara Short,
  • SCC Alternative High School
  • Honorable Mention: "Callie" by Zeb Johnson, Anna-Jonesboro High School

Research Essay 11th/12th Grade Division

  • 1st Place: "The Benefits of Music Education" by Briana Hammon, Meridian High School
  • 2nd Place: "The Flip Side of the Ethanol Coin" by Caroline Bremer , Vienna High School
  • 3rd Place: "Roles and Responsibilities of Teachers" by Patrick Daum, Vienna High School
