SCC Volleyball Named NJCAA Academic Team of the Year
3/6/10
Shawnee Community College's volleyball team was recently awarded the National Junior College Athletic Association distinction of Volleyball Academic Team of the Year. Coach Mike Fitzgerald submitted the team for the honor in February. With an accumulated grade point average of 3.72, the team is ranked second overall among junior college sports teams.
Alecha Wildman, a SCC sophomore on the team shared her thoughts on the honor, "the team always puts academics and the sport ahead of everything. During the season, the team practices two to three hours every day, but we still have time to keep up with our schoolwork. That is very important." Wildman maintains an impressive 4.0 grade point average.
Wildman divides up the credit for their success to the small class size and individual attention that SCC instructors give to students. Also contributing is the strong leadership from Fitzgerald and the pride that the team possesses.
Nine sophomores returned to the team this year, encouraging the new players to dig a little deeper to succeed, both on the court and in the classroom.
