Shawnee Community College TRiO programs hosted students from SIU, John A. Logan, and Rend Lake College on Saturday for the TRIO South celebration of National TRiO Day. Recognized by congressional resolution, National TRiO Day is meant to focus the nation's attention on the needs of disadvantaged young people and adults aspiring to improve their lives. This year the day was proclaimed as a National Day of Services. The SCC event collected canned goods for local food pantries.
Presenters included SCC board of trustee member Don E. Patton. He led two open sessions discussing motivation and leadership strategies for academic success. Representatives from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, Chamber & Associates, and the SIU-C Wellness Center also provided sessions full of information on educational funding, career planning, and wellness. Lindsay Meisenheimer and Marta Partridge of the SCC Educational Talent Search staff also presented sessions.
"The event is a great opportunity for students to network and meet fellow SSS members from other area TRiO programs," said SCC Student Support Services director Jeff McGoy. Shawnee Community College has two TRiO programs, Student Support Services and Educational Talent Search. For more information on the TRiO programs at SCC, visit www.shawneecc.edu.
