Saints Read Celebration a Success!
3/1/10
A crowd of over 200 gathered at SCC on Sat., Feb. 27, to help young readers in our area celebrate their reading success in the SAINTS READ literacy program. Children, parents and grandparents helped to honor young readers who met their reading goals for three months. Reading logs were sent to all area schools and children in grades K-6 were invited to take part in this program. If children returned their reading logs to teachers, they were invited by "Bernie and Bernadette," the SCC mascots, to a pizza party and celebration. Each reader who attended the party received a certificate of honor, free VIP seating and recognition at the Homecoming Ballgame including free popcorn. Their names were entered into a drawing for prizes at the party.
Each reader will receive a complimentary photo with Bernie and Bernadette. Congratulations to the 160 students who took part in this program. Over 1500 books were read by these children. Top reader in the program is Kylee Tapley of Century Elementary who read over 400 books. Mrs. Walquist’s 4th Grade class, Joppa Maple Grove, was honored for having the most readers take part in the program. Coach John Sparks and ball players attended the pre-game festivities encouraging young readers to do well on and off of the court. He encouraged reading and doing well in school. Future Teachers Organization and advisor, Sharon Walker, hosted the celebration. Several prizes were donated by SCC Talent Search, SCC Golf Team and SCC Men’s Basketball Team. Future Teachers Organization and SCC Athletics visit various elementary schools throughout the year to read to children and encourage literacy in the SCC district.
