Shawnee Community College is pleased to announce a new reading program for area school children, SAINTS READ!  Elementary children are invited to take part in this reading program and earn special rewards from Shawnee Community College.

Local teachers in grades K-6 will distribute reading logs to their students, which will be returned to the college in order to determine the top achievers. The program will begin in October and will end in Jan. 31, 2007. There will be a celebration for students who meet their goals at SCC’s Homecoming Game on Feb. 17. 

Students who meet their goals will be eligible for several prizes. A pizza party on Homecoming Day, Feb. 17, and a free picture with Bernie, plus special seating and introduction of winning readers at half-time of the Homecoming Game will be part of the prizes. Also, students will be able to save half of the price of Saints Basketball Camp tuition for summer 2007. Students will also be able to enter their name in a drawing for a free S.C.C. jacket and special Saints autographed basketball!

“Bernie,” the SCC mascot and some Saints athletes will be visiting our area schools to promote SAINTS READ. We are looking forward to working with our area schools to promote literacy in the Southernmost part of Illinois.
