Shawnee Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter recently received notice of Pinnacle Silver status in PTK’s 2006 Pinnacle Scholarship Award Program. To recognize this accomplishment, the organization’s headquarters sent the SCC chapter a $100 Scholarship Award. The Pinnacle Award program encourages chapters to enhance their methods of communicating the benefits of membership to eligible students. To earn the Pinnacle Silver Chapter designation, a chapter must increase its membership acceptance rate by ten percent of the previous year. SCC’s chapter increased its membership by 34 percent, from 55 to 74 members.
Today, Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 2 million members and 1,200 chapters located in 50 United States, U.S. territories, Canada, Germany, and Japan. In 1929, the American Association of Community Colleges recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the official honor society for two-year colleges.
