Smoke Free Illinois Act Affects SCC
12/12/07
Shawnee Community College will be enforcing the Smoke Free Illinois Act, effective January 1, 2008, making all SCC campuses smoke-free environments. The law states that individuals may smoke on campus, but must remain 15 feet from any entrance to a public place.
"The college is in full support of this law," SCC President Larry Peterson said. "The wellness program on campus already encourages students, as well as employees, to be as healthful as possible and this is just one more opportunity for the college community to become healthier."
Complete details of the Smoke Free Illinois Act, Public Act 095-001 can be found on the Illinois General Assembly website at www.ilga.gov. No smoking signs will be clearly posted at every entrance and throughout the college. Ashtrays and containers will be removed from the campus.
The ban prohibits smoking in the new student housing development. Any persons violating the Smoke Free Illinois Act will be fined an amount between $100 and $250. Each day that a violation occurs is a separate violation.
Any person may report complaints to 1-866-973-4646 or www.smoke-free.illinois.gov.
