Shawnee Community College is hosting a free seminar, "My Life Before and After Meth" on Friday, October 19, 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the Shawnee Community College Educational Center. This event will focus on the story of one boy's struggle with meth as well as other stories of local meth-survivors.
After the meth-related death of Shawn Bridges, his father, Jack Bridges, along with several other individuals, have dedicated numerous hours to bringing awareness to the effects of meth. One way this is being done is through a scholarship set up in the name and memory of Shawn Bridges. This scholarship was developed by Roy "Buddy" and Vicki Walls who were involved in the last days of Shawn's life, and is intended for students to attend Shawnee Community College. This scholarship can be applied towards tuition, fees, books, and housing up to $2,000 per year. Another way that awareness of this dangerous drug addiction is being achieved is through seminar presentations.
Jack and Buddy have developed a friendship with some individuals who were once meth addicts, but have now successfully completed rehabilitation through the Cape Girardeau Family Counseling Center for Women and Children. These individuals would like to tell the story of how their life was almost destroyed by this drug. Their stories are moving and at times shocking, but will definitely enlighten all about the horrors of this killer drug.
Informational booths will be set up and staffed with professionals for participants to speak with and pick up educational materials.
