For the past year, students from Kentucky and Missouri have joined Illinois classmates at Shawnee Community College for Massage Therapy program classes. SCC has graduated over 75 students since the program began in 2001.
Shawnee Community College's Massage Therapy one-year certificate program is an intense program designed to introduce the student to the history, current trends, basic theories and techniques of massage. Students explore ethical issues, laws, anatomy and physiology, pathology, and business practices. The students in the program utilize the new massage therapy lab near the fitness center in building L. Throughout the year, the students periodically host open labs; times when other SCC students and the general public are invited to take advantage of seated massages.
Registration for the 2010-11 massage therapy class is now open. The program is limited to 16 students and is taught by Andra Fahlberg, Licensed Massage Therapist. Classes begin August 18. To register, students must meet with an SCC advisor and fulfill standard SCC registration requirements. In addition, students must provide proof of a national background check by CertifiedBackground.com, receive and provide documentation of the receipt of a one-hour, full-body professional massage from a licensed massage therapist and provide documentation of a medical exam.
