A Southern Illinois Story of a Splintered Cherokee
06/07/07
Marlene Rivero, an award winning southern Illinois storyteller will take the stage on Saturday, June 23 at 7 p.m. in the Shawnee Community College Educational Center. Rivero’s African-American and Native-American heritage brings to life the story of her great-great-grandmother, a Cherokee who was forced into slavery. Rivero describes the saga as a journey from freedom to slavery and back again to freedom. The first-person characterization, complete with authentic period costumes and props, takes the listener on a journey into the past.
The event is sponsored by Shawnee Community College. Admission is $5 for adults and $2.50 for senior citizens, students and children. The maximum admission charge per family is $10. For more information, contact Tim Frizzell, SCC Special Events Facilitator, at 618-634-3323.
