SCC Student Spotlight, November 10, 2014
Shawnee Community College graduates several successful students that go on and accomplish their educational and professional goals. One of our graduates, Kirsten Trambley of Vienna has recently achieved her goals, both educationally and professionally.
Kirsten graduated from Vienna High School in 2011 with honors and was an Illinois State Scholar. She then furthered her education at Shawnee Community College earning her Associate's of Arts degree with honors in 2012. Trambley then finished her Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications: Multimedia Journalism degree with a minor in literature at Southeast Missouri State University in 2013.
Kirsten currently works as a DJ at River Radio for 101.5 CIL-FM and is also the Drama Club Director and Beta Club Co-Sponsor at Vienna High School.
She was very involved at SCC as well as SEMO in various clubs/committees including the Future Teacher's Organization, Phi Theta Kappa, Music Club, Drama Club, Omicron Delta Kappa, and reporter/photographer for the Southeast Arrow, and an on-air DJ at Rage 103.7.
Trambley has been involved with a community called, Chrysalis, which is a Church community involved with several churches since 2008.
SCC's Marketing Coordinator, Emily Elliott asked Kirsten a series of questions about her journey at Shawnee Community College.
Why did you choose SCC?
I decided to attend SCC after high school to continue earning my Associate's Degree and to continue performing with the music and theatre departments. At the time of my high school graduation, I had earned nearly all of the required credits for an Associate of Arts degree, but I was still missing a few classes. I spent one year at SCC to complete the required courses, study other subjects that interested me, performed in two musicals and one madrigal, and stayed active in the college's clubs. I was a member of four clubs and an officer in three of those, and I also held an Award of Excellence scholarship.
What were your favorite things about SCC?
I loved everything about SCC! It was a perfect transition for me between the relaxed high school setting at Vienna and the rigorous university atmosphere at Southeast. I particularly enjoyed the performing arts opportunities, getting to know many of my instructors, seeing friends who I made in high school, and participating in Drama Club, Music Club, Future Teacher's Organization, and Phi Theta Kappa.
If you could give advice to new incoming freshmen coming to SCC, what would you tell them?
I advise incoming students to participate in any clubs and take any classes that may interest them in addition to their required course work. At Shawnee, tuition and fees are much more affordable than at many other educational institutions while still maintaining a high scholastic standard, and I think students in the area should take full advantage of this opportunity.
Was SCC the right choice for you?
SCC was definitely the right choice for me. When I was a student, I felt completely at home. Last fall, I returned to perform Shrek the Musical, and I was also the dance captain; I felt as if I fit in once again. Even further, I taught Pre-ACT preparation classes at the Anna Extension Center and at the Main Campus, and I enjoyed being on the other side of the classroom in of my favorite schools. If I had the opportunity to relive my life, I would again attend SCC because I loved it.
All of us at Shawnee Community College are very proud of Kirsten, as we are of all our students. We are glad to have been a part of her success story.
