New Student Trustee Credits Success to Beta Club

Shannon Knowles of Ullin has joined the elite group of Shawnee Community College students who have had the honor of serving on the SCC Board of Trustees. Knowles is a life-long resident of the Southern Illinois region and graduated from Century High School in Ullin, where she was a member of the Beta Club, Science Club, Student Council, Year Book Club, and Career Prep.

She credits her success to Beta Club participation, which required not only a high level of academic achievement, but an even higher level of teamwork, leadership, and community service. "My Beta Club experience was also very exciting, and that experience provided me with the confidence and skills needed to get involved with more activities," said Knowles with a smile. "The Career Prep program at SIUC and the Youth Leadership Academy at Shawnee Community College also gave me the insight and direction needed to further pursue my education."

She also attended the Tri-County Vocational School in Tamms, earning her Certified Nurse Assistant certification and the honor of Student of the Year. As evident in her dedication to serve, she has chosen physical therapy as a career choice, where she will have the opportunity to help people and bring joy into their lives. Knowles said, "I believe that the ability to help someone in a small way can go a long way in making a difference."

Knowles received the Ullin Veteran Scholarship to attend SCC and serves as President of the Student Senate. She was elected in a campus-wide student election in April and will serve throughout the upcoming school year.
