Groundbreaking Event April 20
03/30/07
Three new buildings will soon be a reality at Shawnee Community College. Additions to main campus include a Medical Arts and Sciences Building, a Career Technology Center, and the Foundation’s Student Housing Project which will be just west of the main campus. The Groundbreaking Event is scheduled for Friday April 20, with a ceremony at noon.
The 22,000 square foot Medical Arts and Sciences Building will be situated on the east end of the main campus, and will house all allied health programs at the college, such as nursing, medical coding, massage therapy and others. A student activity center and a new fitness center with upgraded equipment and floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the lake behind campus will complete the building plans. The college plans to have construction completed for the Medical Arts and Sciences Building for the Spring 2009 semester.
The groundbreaking event will also celebrate the construction of the Career Technology Center which will house numerous vocational programs at the college. Truck driving, appliance repair and welding are just a few of the programs that will utilize this space. The expected opening for this building is fall 2008.
The SCC Foundation has been working to provide housing for students in the area who would like to live closer to campus. The student housing will have 52 rooms which will accommodate approximately 100 students. Each wing will have a common area with a lounge, kitchenette, laundry facility and vending machines. Each room will have its own shower and bathroom along with internet access, two desks, two chairs and two beds. The building will be managed by the Foundation, and will have a resident assistant for each wing.
