Celebrating Young Writers at Shawnee - 5/4/11

High School students throughout the Shawnee Community College district were recently honored as participants in a writing contest sponsored by the college. Celebrating Young Writers recognized the literary skills of area high school students in three categories: short fiction, poetry and research essay.
Jenna Ribbing (pictured above) shared her award winning poetry works at the 2nd Annual Shawnee Community College High School Writing Contest award ceremony. Her works, "Poor Boy" and "Sometimes More" placed 1st and 2nd in the 10th and 11th grade poetry division. Ribbing also placed 1st in the Short Fiction division for "The Abyss." She is a student at Anna-Jonesboro High School.

Nicoale Mercer, a student at Massac County High School, placed 3rd in the 9th/10th grade short fiction division for "The King's Peril."

Shawnee High School students Shaylin Goins and Kaitlyn Dodd both received 2nd place awards at the ceremony. Goins was honored for her poetry in the 11th/12th grade division, "Cover to Cover." Dodd was honored for her nonfiction story "A New Classic and a 'Classic' Classic."
