ULLIN - Enrollment at Shawnee Community College is at an all-time high.
Figures released today show a six percent increase in the college's spring enrollment over last year, which puts student headcount at 2,592. But this number does not include dual credit courses - which have not yet been counted - or late start classes, which begin February 8.
"It's possible that we will see an overall increase of 10 percent this semester," said Dr. Larry Peterson, president of Shawnee Community College. "We are consistently seeing strong numbers and this is very good growth."
In addition to the number of students choosing Shawnee Community College, the number of credit hours being taken by students is also on the increase. This semester, under the current headcount, credit hours have reached 25,082, up 1,500 from last year.
"I think the reason for this is that more and more people are realizing the great educational value offered at Shawnee Community College," Peterson said. "Our facilities, our instructors, our institution are something to be proud of."
Peterson also explained that the college is offering a record number of late-start classes. These, he said, are day, evening, Internet, and distance learning courses that cover a wide variety of curriculums. Students are encouraged to begin registering now for those classes.
"These classes range from agriculture and art to biology, math, English, social work and many others," Peterson said.
The record spring semester numbers at Shawnee Community College follow a 21 percent increase in enrollment during the fall semester.
All of this has been accomplished even at a time when state funding has been slow to arrive and difficult to count on.
"We are off to a great start in 2010 and we are going to keep promoting our college and what it has to offer more now than ever," Peterson said.
