Shawnee Development Council Celebrates 45 Years

ULLIN -Edward M. Smith, Midwest Regional Manager of the Laborer's International Union of North America, spoke to a crowd gathered Thursday in Karnak to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Shawnee Development Council. Smith's father, Connell F. Smith, served with the agency for several years.

SCC has a long-standing relationship with Shawnee Development Council. Shawnee Community College's first administrative offices were housed in Shawnee Development Council's Karnak office during the college's formation.

Shawnee Development Council serves the southern Illinois counties of Alexander, Hardin, Johnson, Massac, Pope, Pulaski, and Union. SDC executive director Cheryl Vanderford spoke of SDC's vision of unity and the desire to provide the opportunity for a better quality of life for area residents. She continued, "There is still so much to be done and we look forward to the next 45 years of timeless commitment.
