High School of Business Program Offered

11/20/09

Shawnee Community College in partnership with The Five County Regional Vocational System and the Southernmost Illinois business and education community will give students in the region the opportunity to participate in the High School of Business class.

The High School of Business program is offered through MBAResearch a not-for-profit curriculum center. The Center is funded and operated by a consortium of 39 state education departments. MBAResearch studies business operations and uses input from business leaders nationwide to build rigorous, relevant, and useful standards and curriculum. The High School of Business program is a pilot project and the first offered in the state of Illinois.

The mission of High School of Business is to prepare students with the business knowledge and skills to excel in college-level business administration programs and the workforce. Students incorporate High School of Business into a college-preparatory style course of study, resulting in the delivery of academic knowledge that is then used in rigorous business-focused projects. The program at Five County will offer eight courses to juniors and seniors who upon satisfactory completion will receive dual college credit.

Students begin the course learning Leadership skills necessary for successful entry in the real-world of business. The course content is sequenced for students to identify, plan, implement, and evaluate a service-learning project based on the needs of their community/school. The Leadership class leads into Principle of Business, a project-based business course that develops student understanding and skills in such areas as business law, economics, financial analysis, human resources management, information management, marketing, operations, and strategic management. Coursework is offered over two years with the curriculum sequence of Wealth Management, Business Economics, Principles of Marketing, Principles of Finance, Principles of Management and Business Strategies. Throughout the coursework, students are presented problem-solving situations for which they must apply academic and critical-thinking skills. Formal reflection on each activity is an on-going component of the course that reinforces the project-based learning.
