Paul
Simon Essay Contest Winner Announced
SCC student Joshua Yates was named the Paul Simon Essay contest winner for
the 2006 competition. Yates' piece, How My Community College Changed My Life,
told the story of how he promised his dying father that he would go back to
school and "make something of his life." Since returning to school
at SCC, Yates took the initiative to join the student newspaper, the TEMPO.
He got involved in student government, and assumed leadership positions on
campus, serving as the Student Trustee. Yates plans to complete a political
journalism internship in Washington D.C. this summer, and then transfer to
a four-year institution.
