Student Academic Success is Highlighted at March Meeting
The College Bowl team at Shawnee Community College has
advanced to the state competition. The five-member team is currently undefeated
and would like to win the state title. "This has been an awesome season,"
sponsor Rhonda Dillow said. "They are true scholars and need your support
on the road to the big one." Current College Bowl team members are Nathan
Holden, Anna; Adam Johnson, Vienna; Jacqueline Landreth, Vienna; Allen Morrow,
Elco; and Kevin Widdows, Alto Pass.
The 2005 Lady Saints Volleyball team at SCC recently received notice of being
named the Fall Academic Team-of-the-Year in the nation at the Division II
level. This nation-wide honor is due to the Lady Saints for achieving academic
excellence throughout the season. The team finished the fall semester with
a 3.69 GPA. Coach Mike Fitzgerald said he could not be more proud of the team.
"These girls worked hard to keep up their grades and have a winning season.
Their efforts paid off by having the team tie for the top GPA in the nation."
The Shawnee Community College Volleyball team finished in 3rd place at the
Region 24 Tournament held at Parkland College and finished the season ranked
24th in the nation, with a record of 35-17.
Announcements:
End of Semester Dates
With students on spring break this week, the end of the semester is getting
closer. Dr. Richard Massie, VP for Student Services announced to the Board
that the annual Honor's Banquet will be May 5 at 6 p.m., and that Commencement
will take place May 12.
College Goal Sunday Successful
More than 140 participants came to SCC to receive help filling out their financial
aid documents last month. This is an annual event, put on during the month
of February in honor of Financial Aid Month.
All-Illinois Academic Team
Two SCC students were nominated to the Phi Theta Kappa All Illinois Academic
Team. PTK members Amy Poole and Joshua Yates were nominated this year. PTK
is the international honor society for two-year colleges.
TEMPO Nominated
The student-produced newspaper on campus, the TEMPO, was recently nominated
in an Illinois Community College Journalism Association competition for layout,
photography, news, features, and photo spread. The awards will be announced
at the ICCJA conference at the end of March in Chicago.
Foundation Update
The Foundation meetings have been focused on the annual Dinner/Auction scheduled
for March 11. The student housing designs and plans for the new facilities
are in progress.
