Geoffrey Obrzut to Speak at SCC Commencement
Students, faculty and staff at
Shawnee Community College are making preparations for the closing of another
semester. Students can be seen studying for tests and preparing for finals,
which will be here in just one month. Before the commencement ceremony takes
place, there will be several other events honoring students as the school
year ends. Spring Fest, as well as the Athletic Banquet will be April 26.
The Student Support Services Awards will be awarded May 3, and the Honors
Ceremony will take place May 5 at 6 p.m. Commencement will begin at 7 p.m.,
Friday May 12, where all graduates from the year will be honored in the SCC
gymnasium. Geoffrey Obrzut, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Illinois
Community College Board, will be the 2006 Commencement ceremony speaker.

Scholarships Awarded
To date, 31 scholarships have been awarded to students in the SCC district
for the fall semester. Financial Aid has been busy awarding current scholarship
moneys to students.
- Financial aid checks were mailed
March 29.
- Awarded $1,186,612 in Pell grant
money to 805 students.
- Awarded $202,890.68 in MAP (Monetary
Award Program) grant money to 485 students.
- Awarded $19,750 in IIA (Illinois
Incentive for Access) grant money to 79 students.
- Awarded $15,600 in SEOG (Supplemental
Educational Opportunity Grant) money to 52 students.
Apprenticeship Day Successful
The annual Apprenticeship
day allows students in grades 3-9 to visit campus and learn about different
vocational careers from Operating Engineers' Local #318, Iron Workers' Local
#782 and Carpenters' Local #640. This year, 65 students participated in Apprenticeship
day.
Car Show Date Approaching
The 16th Annual SCC Car Show will take place Sunday, May 7 from 8 a.m. to
4 p.m. Cars may enter the show for a fee of $15.
Faculty Member Receives Award
Mathematics instructor Richard Diefenbach was awarded the Illinois Mathematics
Association of Community Colleges Lifetime Achievement Award.
Foundation Update
The 12th Annual Dinner Auction raised more than $21,000 that will go toward
student scholarships. The next fundraiser for the foundation will be the annual
Golf Classic June 9 at the Gambit in Vienna.

as Executive Secretary II.
