SCC Represented in Illinois Occupational Outlook

The Illinois Occupational Outlook offers information regarding career information for those looking for jobs in the state of Illinois. Shawnee Community College offers many of the programs listed in the Associates Degree, Post-Secondary Vocational Training, Short and Moderate-term on-the-job Training categories.

Of the Associates Degrees listed, SCC offers four of the top seven occupations that provide the most annual job openings each year. They are Registered Nurses, Computer Support Specialists, Medical Records and Health Information Technicians, and Medical and Clinical Lab Technicians. There are 5,060 annual openings for these occupations, which usually require two years of full-time academic work after high school. An associates degree is the usually the minimum training level for many occupations in the state of Illinois that require licensure or certification through the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.

SCC offers five of the six Vocational Training After High School occupational programs. These include Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics, Licensed Practical Nurses, Hair Dressers/Stylists/Cosmetologists, Welders, Cutters, Solderers and Brazers, and Legal Secretaries. There are 3,581 annual openings for the above listed occupations.

Half of the programs for Moderate-Term on-the-job Training occupations are available at SCC. Moderate training describes training where one to twelve months of combined on-the-job experience is combined with informal classroom activities. These programs include Truck Drivers, Heavy/Tractor Trailer, Executive Secretaries & Administrative Assistants, Bookkeeping/Accounting/Auditing Clerks, and Correctional Officers and Jailors. There are 6,124 annual job openings in the categories offered at SCC.

SCC offers three programs in the Short-Term on-the-job Training category. This category is assigned to a large number of occupations where in just a few days, weeks or months through observing experienced workers and asking questions the average worker can achieve the necessary skill levels. SCC programs are Cashiers, Receptionists and Information Clerks, and Security Guards. There are 12,443 annual openings in the three programs SCC offers.
