SCC Represented in Illinois Occupational Outlook
The Illinois Occupational Outlook offers information regarding career information
for those looking for jobs in the state of Illinois. Shawnee Community College
offers many of the programs listed in the Associates Degree, Post-Secondary
Vocational Training, Short and Moderate-term on-the-job Training categories.
Of the Associates Degrees listed, SCC offers four of the top seven occupations
that provide the most annual job openings each year. They are Registered
Nurses, Computer Support Specialists, Medical Records and Health Information
Technicians, and Medical and Clinical Lab Technicians. There are 5,060 annual
openings for these occupations, which usually require two years of full-time
academic work after high school. An associates degree is the usually the
minimum training level for many occupations in the state of Illinois that
require licensure or certification through the Illinois Department of Professional
Regulation.
SCC offers five of the six Vocational Training After High School occupational
programs. These include Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics, Licensed
Practical Nurses, Hair Dressers/Stylists/Cosmetologists, Welders, Cutters,
Solderers and Brazers, and Legal Secretaries. There are 3,581 annual openings
for the above listed occupations.
Half of the programs for Moderate-Term on-the-job Training occupations
are available at SCC. Moderate training describes training where one to
twelve months of combined on-the-job experience is combined with informal
classroom activities. These programs include Truck Drivers, Heavy/Tractor
Trailer, Executive Secretaries & Administrative Assistants, Bookkeeping/Accounting/Auditing
Clerks, and Correctional Officers and Jailors. There are 6,124 annual job
openings in the categories offered at SCC.
SCC offers three programs in the Short-Term on-the-job Training category.
This category is assigned to a large number of occupations where in just
a few days, weeks or months through observing experienced workers and asking
questions the average worker can achieve the necessary skill levels. SCC
programs are Cashiers, Receptionists and Information Clerks, and Security
Guards. There are 12,443 annual openings in the three programs SCC offers.
