SCC Hosts WYSE Testing (released 2/16/05)
Shawnee Community College hosted the annual Illinois Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Academic Challenge February 10. The challenge has been an annual event in Illinois schools since 1975.
Students from Anna-Jonesboro, Cairo, Century, Dongola, Goreville, Joppa, Massac County, Meridian, Shawnee and Vienna high schools competed in the subject areas of biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, math and physics. The schools were separated into two divisions. Division 700 contains schools with 301-699 students and division 300 contains schools with 300 or fewer students.
Overall, the division 300 team winners were Goreville High School with a first place score of 446 points, Cairo High School second with 441 points, and Century High School in third with 414 points. Massac County High School took the lead of division 700 with 496 points, Vienna High School came in second with 439 points and Anna-Jonesboro High School was third with 435 points.
In individual results for biology, division 300, Della Carroll, Shawnee High School; came in first. Second place went to Michael Harrell, Cairo High School. Haley Anderson, Century High School; and Julie Hill, Shawnee High School; tied for third. Division 700 biology was led by Heather Heisner of Massac County High School, with Joe Hogan, A-J High School, in second and Grant Hahn, Massac County High School in third.
Angelica Johnson of Cairo High School won Division 300 chemistry ahead of Michael Harrell, Cairo High School; Keri Smith, Meridian High School; and Brantley Stricker, Century High School all tied for second. Six students tied for third in chemistry: Tiffany Dunn, Goreville High School, Kayla Hoffman, Dongola Unit School; Hillary Hoffner, Dongola Unit School; Brian Rader, Joppa High School; Lavell Stone, Goreville High School; and Jasmine Wiley, Cairo High School. Ryan Riffel of A-J High School took first place in division 700 chemistry, with Colton McNichols and Gavin Riepe, both of Massac County High School, tied for second, and Robert Dale, Vienna High School, took third.
Tied for first place in division 300 computer science, were Reggie McIntosh and Sean Snyder, both of Cairo High School. Tied for second were Dustin Fox, Goreville High School; and Krissy Hooks, Century High School. Ezra Waddy of Meridian High School claimed third place. Emily Slone, Vienna High School won the first place award for division 700 computer science. Tied for second place were Brian Anderson, A-J High School; Bradley Atkinson, and Jared Street, both of Massac County High School. Michael Brown, A-J High School won third place.
Curtis Jenkins of Goreville High School won the first place award for division 300 engineering graphics. Elizabeth Shearer and Haley Anderson of Century High School won second and third place respectively. Division 700 engineering graphics was led by Vienna High School, with David Lindle in first, Emily Slone in second and Casey Wilkins in third place.
Division 300 English competition was taken over by Shawnee High School. Della Carroll came in first, Julie Hill in second, and Brittany Ryan in third. Kate Mittendorf, Massac County High School won the Division 700 English competition. Brooke Armstrong, Massac County High School came in second. Tied for third place were Heather Heisner, Massac County High School; Chris Hunnercook, Massac County High School; and Laura Treat, Vienna High School.
Bianca Puello, Goreville High School; won first place in division 300 math. Tied for second place were Kayla Boone, Meridian High School; Jessie Brooks, Goreville High School; Nakieva Hamilton, Meridian High School; and Alicia Johnson, Joppa High School. Kacey Coonce, Goreville High School was awarded third place. Division 700 math was led by Kate Mittendorf, Massac County High School, followed by Marty Bushclaw, Massac County High School in second and Damon Webster, A-J High School in third.
Division 300 physics first place was awarded to Brittany Hubbard, Century High School. Amber Chism, Dongola Unit School was awarded second place and Jessie Brooks, Goreville High School won third place. Shane Neal, Vienna High School won first place in division 700 physics competition. Chris Hunnercook, Massac County High School won second place and Colton McNichols, Massac County High School won third.
