It was homecoming at Shawnee Saturday afternoon and the Saints were ready for some March Madness basketball action. It was an exciting atmosphere as the gym was nearly filled to capacity. Lincoln Land was in second place in the MWAC and had just beat the #4 team in the nation earlier in the week.
Lincoln Land started off rolling leading 10-2 over the Saints. Coach Sparks called an early timeout to re-organize his troops. It seemed to work because SCC battled back with a mini-run that cut the lead to two.
Shawnee was without Mario Thomas who was serving a one game suspension for leaving the bench and Corey Huckelberry who tore his ACL in practice last week. It did not seem to get any better as Darius Lewis, MWAC freshman of the year candidate, went down early with an ankle injury and did not return. “That has been the story of our season. Injury after injury, but are kids just continue to fight through it. We had big games out of Brandon Bundren and Michael Hawkins who both saw major minutes. These guys played hard, it just unfortunate we could not seal the deal in the end.” Coach Sparks commented.
Shawnee and Lincoln Land were all tied up at the half 33 to 33. The top scores for Shawnee were Williams with 12 and Bundren with 6. Lincoln Land was led by Bryant who scored 14 points.
SCC took a lead as big as 11 points but the Loggers of Lincoln Land battled back. The Loggers hit 10 3pt FG’s keeping them within striking distance. Under 30 seconds left Bryant came off of a flare screen to knock down his fifth 3pt. basket of the afternoon tying the game at 67-67. Torres brought the ball up the court for a last second shot, but it fell short. SCC would go into overtime.
In overtime the Loggers of Lincoln were able to knock down more shots as the Saints fell short 77-75. “I am extremely proud of the guys today. They gave a great effort for 40 minutes. We were just a couple of stops away from getting it down this afternoon. Lincoln Land made there own breaks in the clutch.” Coach Sparks commented.
