SCC TRIO Day Scheduled
for Feb. 25
TThe Shawnee Community College TRIO program will be
hosting a TRIO Day Feb. 25. The event will last from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.,
with activities including workshops, speakers and focus groups. State Representative
Brandon Phelps, Ullin Mayor Mike Dewitt and SCC President Dr. Larry Choate
are scheduled to speak during the event.
TRIO was established as a series of programs to help low-income Americans
enter college, graduate and move on to participate more fully in America's
economic and social life. These Programs are funded under Title IV of the
Higher Education Act of 1965 and are referred to as the TRIO Programs (initially
just three programs). While student financial aid programs help students
overcome financial barriers to higher education, TRIO programs help students
overcome class, social and cultural barriers to higher education. Shawnee
Community College currently has two active TRIO programs, Student Support
Services and Educational Talent Search.
TRIO day is open to the public, and everyone interested is encouraged to
attend, but there is a $25.00 registration fee. All attendants must register
by Feb. 22. If anyone is interested in presenting a workshop, on topics
such as leadership, self-esteem and image, college preparation, career counseling,
and healthy lifestyle advice spaces can are available. For more information
regarding TRIO Day at SCC, call 618-634-3226.
