Education Workshops Offered

The Shawnee Community College Education Program will be offering the following workshops throughout the spring 2006 semester for area educators. Each workshop will cost $25.00 or less. For registration information, contact Sharon Walker at 800-481-2242, ext. 3235.

METH BUSTERS - Feb. 2, 2006, 6:00-9:00pm (approx.)
Presenter: Dean Hamilton; Southern Illinois Drug Task Force
Meets Special Ed. requirements
Signs of users, deadly consequences, and prevention techniques.
For: School Administrators, teachers, counselors, parents, youth group leaders and concerned citizens.

BLOGGING FOR INSTRUCTIONAL PURPOSES - Feb. 17, 2006; 9:00-12:00

To Blog or not to blog…that is the question! Have you heard of blogs but haven't seen a way to incorporate them into your classroom? Your students know how to blog, and are blogging on a regular basis! Why not try audio blogs in your classroom? This is an introduction to a technology tool that can be used across the curriculum! Join us for a fun and interactive morning that will create interest and motivation in your classroom. (It is advisable that you purchase a set of computer head-phones for this workshop. There will be a limited number of headphones available.)

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION WORKSHOP - PROJECT LEARNING TREE
This is a service-learning presentation by the U of I Extension Office.
Feb.24, 2006; 8:45-3:30pm
Certification and resources to teach Project Learning Tree, a national environmental education program widely-used among educators. Hundreds of environmental class projects and training aids, as well as resources and grant information available. For: PreK-8 educators, aides, college students, science and environmental educators
Cost: $10.00 fee, includes catered breakfast and lunch

AUDIO BLOGGING - April 7, 2006; 9:00-12:00

In this exciting - cutting edge workshop, you'll be introduced to blogging, audio-blogging, podcasting, and a free recording program called Audacity. You will walk away from the workshop with the knowledge of how to download and use Audacity (including a written step-by-step instruction sheet to take back home with you) plus you will create your own blog at a free site that you will be able to use for your classroom - or for personal and professional growth. This workshop is a fine introduction to blogging and Audacity, or a follow-up to Blogging For Instructional Purposes. No previous blogging experience required! POWER POINT WORKSHOP - April 13, 9:00-12:00
Instructor: Faith Crimm; Meets Special Ed. requirements
Bring in your favorite lesson or unit and receive step-by-step instructions to create a power-point presentation that can be used immediately in your classroom! You will leave with a hard copy of your power-point and detailed steps to help you use power-point regularly as an instructional tool.

NEW TEACHER ACADEMY - May 5, 2006; 9:00-12:00
Presenters: Nancy Brewer and Sherri Goforth; These teachers will share their organization tips, communication techniques with parents, and touch on crucial relationships in the school system and community. Nancy is a very creative Kindergarten teacher at Goreville Grade School. Nancy is well-known for her creative ideas and strategies that make learning fun! You will be ready to put these ideas to use when you leave this workshop. Sherri is a 1st Grade teacher at Lick Creek Elementary School. Sherri will share a valuable handbook that she has created for you to leave with your substitute teachers. No one likes to leave their classroom; but if you must, leave your substitute "armed and ready" for a great day in your classroom!
