Veteran's Day Event
Shawnee
Community College is hosting a Veteran's Day event, called Storytelling:
"In Honor of Our Veterans." The event will take place at 1
and 7 p.m., Wednesday, November 9 in the SCC Atrium.
A group of five presenters will
share stories and memories of times they spent at war, along with family
member's stories. Paul Echols, native of Ullin, IL will share family
stories of his father and three uncles who all served in WWII prior
to Pearl Harbor. Paul will also tell stories of his grandfather who
served in WWI.
Eugene Ulrich served in the Army
Air Corp during 1942-46, with basic training in Boca Raton, Florida
then sent to North Carolina with the intention of going into Meteorology
training and was redirected into communications instead. He then attended
Yale University. upon graduation, he was selected to go into radar training
and then attended Harvard University and MIT. In early 1945 flew overseas
to Europe. By June of 1945 the war of Europe ended, he was then sent
to Germany until July 1946. He achieved Captain status. He is also the
author of "WWII Recollection of Eugene J. Ulrich."
Shirley Wolfe, native of Johnson
County and Faye Morris Bowman, native of Pope County will tell about
their experiences as they recorded interviews with the Johnson County
WWII veterans for a book to be published in late 2006. Bowman will also
talk about her experience during the interviewing/writing of "Update
2000 - 2002 for 'Simmons, Allard, Morris History of Families, Early
1700's to 1998' Military Histories."
There will also be a special vocal
presentation by Kim Ashby, Bryan Caraker, and Amber Holman. Memorabilia
will be on display throughout the day at the college in honor of our
veterans.
