SCC Offers Black History Month Events (released 2/10/05)
Shawnee Community College is offering two free cultural events in honor of Black History Month. Jeff McGoy's One Man Show will take place Feb. 16, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Educational Center of SCC's main campus, and the NIA Dancers will be on SCC campus March 2, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The first show will feature McGoy performing in his seventh One-Man Show, entitled "Remembering When… Overcoming the Odds." The scenes take place at the home of one of McGoys' fictional characters, Jimmie Lee. Lee reflects on conversations from individuals who have come by his home in the past to share stories about the joys, pains, lessons learned and impact black history has had in general. McGoy will perform 10 characters who re-enact the conversations that Jimmie Lee mentions. The show will also have special appearances from local individuals and current SCC students, who will showcase their special talents between Jeff's character changes.
This will be Jeff's fourth One-Man Show at Shawnee Community College. The show will feature characters in both humorous and dramatic scenes. The admission is free and is appropriate for all age groups.
The Nia Dancers have been coming to SCC for 10 years now, in honor of Black History Month. Originating in Paducah, KY, the group was created to inspire young ladies in an area church to get involved in a satisfying activity. They got their name from the Swahili word for "purpose." The men involved in this performance are called the "Nia Heroes" and play percussion. Their performance in the SCC Cafeteria will be free and is open to the public.
