Got Talent: Art Scholarship Recipients

Art Scholarship Recipients

Included in the wave of first-year students at Shawnee Community College are five talented artists from throughout the district. The students were among the dozens of students who submitted their art work in hope of obtaining one of five art scholarships offered at SCC. In addition to studio art classes, the five scholarship recipients will participate in various art department projects, including exhibits and competitions. Mike Faris of Marion serves as head of the art department at Shawnee Community College. Art scholarship recipients are:

Rene Newberry of Anna is the daughter of Tim Newberry and Sheila Castleberry; and Andy and Tammy Coates. While at Anna-Jonesboro High School, she participated in art shows and was a stage crew member for productions. Newberry plans to choose a career in the art field. Sabra Gower of Brookport, is the daughter of Don and Lisa Gower and graduated from Massac County High School, where she received the Illinois State Scholar honor. Her artistry extends to the performing arts as first chair flute and drum major. Art awards include first and second place in the 2010 SCC Art Show; third in the 2010 Yeiser Art Show; and Honorable Mention in the 2009 Yeiser Art Show.

Catie Bunyan is the daughter of Chris and Jill Bunyan of Cobden. She participated in the intercollegiate arts show and was a member of the art club while a student at Cobden High School. After completing an Associate of Art degree at SCC she plans to seek an art education degree.

Katie Bunyard participated in the intercollegiate show and was a member of the art club while a student at Massac County High School. She is the daughter of Steve and Jayne Bunyard of Metropolis. Upon completing her Associate of Arts degree, Bunyard is interested in a career in art therapy.

Christina Faith of Vienna came to SCC this fall with several escrow college credits already completed. The Vienna High School 2010 Salutatorian was a member of the Beta Club, Art Club, and Scholar Bowl team and participated in the WYSE academic competition. Faith received the distinction of Beta Club 75th Art Anniversary National Champion, Illinois State Scholar, and Award of Excellence recipient. She is the daughter of Deborah Faith; and Glen and P.J. Faith.
