2009 Adult Education Recognition Ceremony 5/22/09

Twenty-six GED students where honored at the 18th Annual Shawnee Community College Adult Education Recognition ceremony and reception on Thursday, May 21st in the educational center on the main campus near Ullin. Thirty-two SCC Alternative High School students also received their high school diplomas. Bob Love, former NBA star, shared his life's story, delivering a powerful message of encouragement to the graduates.
Shawnee Community College offers free GED classes throughout the year. The SCC GED Program offers assistance to students in acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to pass the GED examination for a high school equivalency diploma.
During the ceremony, SCC admitted 23 students to the National Adult Education Honor Society. The 2008-09 school year marks the seventh year of the SCC's Adult Education National Honor Society.
The mission of the National Adult Education Honor Society is to provide meaningful recognition to deserving adult education students, to improve student employment opportunities, to develop student ambassadors for local adult education programs and to create adult education awareness with school administrators and state legislators.
Hannah Marquiss of Vienna and Kayla Burton of Tamms were also recognized Thursday evening as recipients of the 2009 Vice President's GED Scholarship. The scholarship covers tuition, fees and book loans.
