Metropolis Elementary Class Adopts Shawnee Community College
While the excuse "the dog ate my homework" has been replaced by "my flash drive crashed," Janet Kruger's Metropolis Elementary 5th grade students are taught that there are no excuses: at least that there are no excuses for students not to plan for a college education. That's the message behind the national No Excuses University Network, a group of elementary, middle, and junior high schools from across the United States.
This network of educators believes they have the power to influence every student to be academically successful, even those who are most at risk. These schools actively promote a comprehensive model of college readiness to all students the moment they begin elementary school.
At the beginning of the school year, Kruger's class adopted Shawnee Community College as part of the No Excuses University Network. Just days before the 40th Annual SCC Commencement, the class visited the SCC campus. After a greeting from the SCC mascot Bernie, the group toured the campus and had a chance to meet with faculty and staff.
SCC President Dr. Larry Peterson caught up with the group and shared his vision for all residents of the district, explaining how SCC is able to prepare them for their future no matter what their educational needs may be. "Our economy is always changing, and new technologies are developing every day, that's why it is important that even in elementary school, that you learn 'how to learn' so you will be prepared for the future."
