Dr. Sheena Gibson Honored as Shawnee Alumna of the Year
Dr. Sheena Gibson of Peoria has been named as Shawnee Community College Alumna of the Year. Dr. Gibson is a native of Villa Ridge and graduated from Meridian High School and attended Shawnee Community College, completing an Associate of Science Degree in 2004.
SCC Board of Trustee member Don E. Patton shared Dr. Gibson's story at the annual Honor's Reception earlier in May. Due to her responsibilities, Dr. Gibson was unable to attend Honor's Night or the 2013 Commencement, but shared her message including, "Retrospectively, I am fortunate to have begun my career with Shawnee Community College. The same tools I began building on 11 years ago, I continue to build on today and I feel even more grounded and better equipped to handle the pressures of my career. Most importantly, I feel inspired to journey on and become motivation for those coming along in my footsteps."
After Shawnee, she transferred to Southern Illinois University Carbondale where she was a student in the University Honors Program. In 2007 Sheena earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences. Dr. Gibson continued with her studies at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in the School of Medicine where in 2012 she was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree.
Dr. Gibson continues to make great strides as she completes her Residency in Family Medicine at the University of Illinois at Peoria College of Medicine in Peoria, Illinois. She is an exemplary representative of Shawnee Community College in that she is dedicated, strives for excellence and believes wholeheartedly that education is the pathway to success.
