SCC Instructor Speaks at Cape Girardeau Anniversary Celebration
Shawnee Community College's Criminal Justice Instructor Paul Echols played a major role Thursday in the 150th anniversary celebration of the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

Self Defense Seminars at SCC
Shawnee Community College counselor Marti Roberts partnered with Anna resident Betty Lille during a recent self-defense seminar held at the SCC Anna Extension Center. Master Christopher Smith of Battleground Martial Arts shared self-defense and safety information, including hands-on training with the participants. Smith repeated the seminar at the main campus.

Statement from SCC President Larry Peterson
SCC President Larry Peterson credited "teamwork" for leading to the apprehension of three individuals believed to be involved in the assault of a security guard at the college’s Ullin campus last Saturday.
A 19-year-old male was arrested. Two juveniles were released to their parents.
"Good things happen when people work together toward a common goal," Peterson said. "In this case, it took hours of teamwork among our college employees, the Illinois State Police, and local media to identify those alleged to be involved in this terrible assault.
The college called a press conference at 10 a.m. today and announced a $2,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of those involved in the assault. Video surveillance showed three males assaulting the security guard just after midnight last Saturday.
Just minutes after the press conference, individuals began coming forward with valuable information.

Shawnee Community College Presents "Willy Wonka"
Over 100 performers will take to the Shawnee Community College stage in the 21st Annual Fall Children's Theatre, "Willy Wonka." Performances will be in the Educational Center located at the main campus near Ullin in November.
Tickets will be available to the public beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, October 20th.

Transfer Day Helps Students Decide Next Step
Shawnee Community College is hosting a Transfer Fair October 21st, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the cafeteria. Transfer day provides current SCC students the opportunity to explore their options in search of a four-year university to pursue their bachelor's degree.

Ah-One, and Ah-Two . . .
Nearly 150 area students were joined by 60 Shawnee Community College students during practice for the annual regional band performance. The regional band will perform at the annual Regional Office of Education Teacher’s Institute held at SCC on Friday, October 9th. The band is under the direction of SCC music instructor John Windings.

SCC Student Trustee Speaks at Rally for MAP Funding
SCC Student Trustee Sumer Helton is greeted by Governor Pat Quinn as she takes the podium Wednesday to speak at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Helton spoke in favor of MAP grant funding for Illinois' college students.

Lady Saints Volleyball
Improve Record to 21-3

The Lady Saints volleyball team continues to have an outstanding season, improving their record to 21-3, by defeating Southwestern IL. at home on Monday.
Even more impressive was their come from behind first place finish in the Meremac Invitational Tourney, at St. Louis C.C. over the weekend. The lady Saints lost their first match of the tournament to Lindenwood University, but battled back to defeat their next five opponents, including Lindenwood, and took first place overall in the tournament. Congratulations to the Lady Saints, and keep the drive alive!

Where Lincoln Walked
Larry Peterson, president of Shawnee Community College, spoke to over 200 elementary school pupils Friday about the life of Abraham Lincoln during an event in Union County.
Peterson was the keynote speaker during the dedication of the "Where Lincoln Walked" project in Jonesboro.
Peterson told the crowd that progressive thinkers, such as Lincoln was, are sometimes misunderstood and even criticized.

Former SCC President Emeritus
Dr. Jack Hill Returns

Former college president Dr. Jack Hill returned to SCC, to tour the new Anna Extension Center Friday with Dr. Larry Peterson.
Dr. Hill opened the first extension center in Anna during his administration, with the intent to provide a permanent "modern" facility to the people of Union county.

Field Biology Students Participate in Monarch Study
Students in SCC's Field Biology Class (Bio 214) recently participated in tagging Monarch butterflies as part of The University of Kansas' "Monarch Watch" Program.
