SCC Livestock Judging Team Gains Valueable Experience at National Competition
The SCC Livestock Judging Team first organized in Fall of 2007 and competed in the Dairy Judging competition at the North American International Livestock Expedition in Louisville, KY. After a 2-year layoff and a dedicated coach and team, the team is back in business.

SCC Art Club Makes Trip to St. Louis
The SCC Art Club made a trip to St. Louis last weekend, to take in some of the amazing architecture of the Gateway City. Among the highlights of their trip were the St. Louis Cathedral Basilica (pictured at left), the Gateway Arch, and dinner at the Spaghetti Factory.
The Art Club raised funds for the trip by hosting a trivia contest last month at SCC.

Mike Faris, SCC Art instructor said, "The students had a great time, and the trip was very educational. Our thanks go out to everyone who participated in our fundraising efforts that made the trip possible."

Senator Durbin and SCC Foundation President Visit Mounds National Cemetery
US Senator Dick Durbin, at right, and Buddy Walls of Mound City visit the gravesite of Walls' father, Roy, at the Mound City National Cemetery Thursday.
Durbin visited the cemetery, commenting on its beauty and historic significance. Walls is the president of the Shawnee Community College Foundation.
His father served in the US Army during World War II and earned a living as a commercial fisherman on the Ohio River.

SCC Alumnus Michael Simelton Returns to Campus
SCC Board of Trustee member Don E. Patton and SCC alumnus Michael Simelton met during a recent visit to the main campus. While on campus Simelton spoke to Myra Bennett’s Community Health Systems class. He told the class, "Despite where you come

from or how your life began, you can be successful: Don’t let your circumstance be the determining factor of your future." Simelton is an Exelon Corporation IT Analyst in Chicago.

SCC Instructor Speaks at FBI’s CODIS Unit in Virginia
As reported earlier on Facebook, Paul Echols, SCC criminal justice instructor, is currently boarding a plane returning from a presentation he gave to the FBI’s CODIS Unit in Virginia. The CODIS Unit manages the Combined DNA Index System in solving crime.

The fact that the FBI called on Echols for a presentation is a major compliment to him and the college’s criminal justice program. We will share more when he returns.

SCC Driver's Safety Course Wins National Award
Get a speeding ticket in southernmost Illinois and you will probably become a student at Shawnee Community College whether you like it or not. However, participating in the four-hour college course is much better than the alternative.

College Bowl Team Takes 2nd at Conference Tourney
The college bowl team at Shawnee Community College took second place last Friday at a conference tournament in Ina.
"We did pretty darn well for such a young team," said Rhonda Dillow, college bowl coach and math and science chair at SCC. "We have a good team, a good bunch."

Lady Saints Volleyball Team Finishes Winning Season at 32-11
The Lady Saints volleyball team's season ended last weekend with losses to Illinois Central and Parkland. Their season's record is 32-11.
Coach Fitzgerald said "This team has nothing to feel badly about in those two losses. The teams we lost to are two of the best in the nation and I expect Illinois Central to be the national champs."

Saints Read Begins Fourth Year of Reading
Shawnee Community College announces literacy initiative SAINTS READ will begin its fourth year this fall. Students in grades K-6 in the Shawnee Community College District have been invited to take part in this reading program. Students are asked to keep Reading Logs for two months.

SCC Experiences 4th Largest Enrollment Growth in the State
Shawnee Community College had the fourth largest fall semester enrollment increase in the state, according to statistics from the Illinois Community College Board.
There are 48 community colleges in Illinois.
