USDA GrantSCC Receives USDA Grant
Southern Illinois Healthcare Special Projects Grant Coordinator Kim Guetersloh delivers HD video equipment to Jean Ellen Boyd, Dean of Instructional Services at Shawnee Community College. The equipment donation is a result of a USDA-Delta Health Care Services Grant and will support nursing and health career education at SCC.
Shawnee Community College participated in the regional effort to address the continued unmet healthcare needs in the Illinois Delta Region through a collaborative effort between Connect SI consortium members and several colleges and two high schools in Southern Illinois.
The goal of the project is to develop and deliver health education and heathcare job training programs by utilizing distance learning equipment and technologies as the primary mode of delivery.

SCC President's Reception Main CampusMain Campus Open House/Meet the President
Lyndell Hubbard and his grandson Andrew, both of Grand Chain, stopped by the Open House/Meet the President event at the main campus on Tuesday.
Community members along with area agency representatives and friends of the college met informally with Dr. Tim Bellamey.
SCC Board of Trustee members were able to join the gathering before the regularly scheduled monthly meeting.

School Supply Drive 2012School Supplies Coming In and Going Back Out to Schools
Shawnee Community College student members of the Future Teachers Organization are collecting basic school supplies for area school children in the district. On her first day back to school, Shawnee sophomore Taylor Hoffmann of Buncombe organized the donations collected so far. Hoffmann is a graduate of Vienna High School and is working to complete her education degree in math. More...

Cairo Delta CenterSCC Cairo Center Moving to the Delta Center in August
Shawnee Community College is pleased to announce the relocation of the Cairo Extension Center to the Delta Center in Cairo effective August 6, 2012.
Shawnee will utilize Delta Center space to provide 5 classrooms and a computer lab facility.
The SCC Cairo Center director Gwen Watts said, "We are very excited about the move to Delta Center; its location will give students easy access to SCC facilities. Relocating to Delta Center will help the Cairo Center continue its course offerings and facilitate the success of the student in addition to building the linkage between other agencies in the community." Haley StorySCC Welcomes Hayley Story to Metro Center
Haley Story joined the Shawnee Community College family in July, serving her hometown as the Metro Center recruiter and advisor. Story graduated from SCC with an Associate of Science and an Associate of Arts, where she attended the Metro Center. She completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Mathematics and Fine Arts/Humanities from Murray State University. More...../

SCC Elite Camp 2012SCC ELITE Camp 2012
Students from across the district participated in the 3rd Annual ELITE (Educating, Leading, and Inspiring Tomorrow's Entrepreneurs) Camp at Shawnee Community College on July 16th through the 19th. The camp was open to incoming 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. Participants learned basic business principles and how to complete a business plan. This year, 14 participants attended the camp. On the final day, campers gave individual presentations about their business plans to parents, staff, and other guests. More...

Derik HolderDerik Holder of Cairo: Two Degrees, One Diploma
When Meridian High School senior, Derik Everitt Holder walked across the stage to receive his two degrees, he was just that: a high school senior. Holder enrolled in Shawnee Community College through the escrow and dual credit programs while still in high school. In fact, he received both an associate of science and an associate of arts degrees the evening before he graduated from Meridian High School as class of 2012 salutatorian.More...

Sharon WalkerLocal Educator Named as ICCTA Outstanding Faculty Member
Sharon Walker was recognized at the 2012 Shawnee Community College Commencement as the Illinois Community College Trustees Association Outstanding Faculty Member. Presenting the award to Walker was her father, Ron Case, who taught for over 30 years at Shawnee Community College and served as Division Chair of the Business Department. The Shawnee Community College agriculture club received a $500 donation on Thursday from the heirs of Charles and Evelyn Schneider and the National Farmers Company. Shawnee agriculture instructor Ed Billingsly (L) accepted the donation from National Farmers Company representative Brian Neville (R) prior to the Pulaski County land auction of the Schneider estate.

SCC Nursing FacultySixth Year Straight: 100 Percent of SCC Nursing Students
Pass NCLEX Exam

The Shawnee Community College Licensed Practical Nursing program boasts a 100 percent of the NCLEX Licensure exams for six straight years. No other nursing program in the state has such an elite success rate. Exam results for the 2011 year were recently released, re-affirming the standard of excellence and quality of the SCC nursing program. Shawnee Community College hosted the annual Illinois Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Academic Challenge on Tuesday. The challenge has been an annual event in Illinois schools since 1975. Community members were welcomed to a presentation of A Journey of Contemporary African American Artists, hosted by Shawnee Community College. The evening reception included powerpoint presentations of artworks by DeSande R, Najjar Abdul-Musawwir, Robert Ketchens, David Crim, and Malcolm McCrae.
