Students from area schools and agencies, joined SCC staff, faculty, and students for a performance of a dance and drum troupe from the Republic of Senegal, Africa. The group performance included songs, folktales, drumming, and concluded with audience members joining the group on stage.

Snakes. The word, the thought makes many folks cringe. But few people realize how valuable snakes and their amphibian cousins are to the ecosystem of Southern Illinois. They are also a valuable raw material to medicine and will likely be in other fields of study yet to have been considered. SCC H.S. Writing ContestCelebrating Young Writers at Shawnee
High School students throughout the Shawnee Community College district are invited to participate in a writing contest sponsored by the college. Celebrating Young Writers will recognize the literary skills of area high school students in three categories: short fiction, poetry, and non-fiction essay. Original work will be judged by college faculty in two divisions: 9th/10th grade and 11th/12th grade. The submission deadline is Friday, February 17, 2012. There is no entry fee. More...

Wrap it Up at SCC Cosmetology
Returning cosmetology students were joined by nine new students in August. Students continue to provide salon services to public patrons from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. In addition to the theory classes and lab sessions, the students attend hair shows to expand their knowledge. As a fundraiser for hair show travel expenses, the Cosmetology Club has developed their own lines of hair wraps, charms, and feathers. Also available are bling strands. Club members can personalize these hair accents.

Additional Basic Nursing Assistant Training Available
In a effort to meet increasing demand for nursing assistants, Shawnee Community College is offering three additional Basic Nurse Assistant classes this fall. Tuition costs are waived for residents of the SCC district.
The Basic Nursing Assistant Training Program is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health and prepares the student to assist the registered professional nurse and licensed practical nurse as an integral member of the health care team in a variety of health care settings.

Certified Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Counselor Education
Shawnee Community College is the only community college in southern Illinois accredited by the Illinois Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Professional Certification Association, Inc. The Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse certificate and degree programs offered by SCC provide counselor training an individual needs to successfully complete the Certified Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Counselor certification examination offered by IAODAPCA and/or work as a professional addictions counselor. SCC Massage Therapy Program Graduates Nine
CC massage therapy students have concluded the one-year intense training program and will graduate on Saturday, making the way clear for the next class which begins August 17. Bethany Gray-Shaw, LMT, of Murphysboro will serve as the new Massage Therapy Coordinator. Gray-Shaw's experiences include massage therapy and Thai massage training, along with acupuncture and Chinese medicine training. More...

Entrepreneurs Abound at SCC
Students from throughout the area recently completed the ELITE Youth Entrepreneurship Camp hosted by Shawnee Community College's Illinois Small Business Development Center. Camp participant Cambria Bigham of Olive Branch said, "This place is AWESOME!!! It is a great place for kids like me to learn how to open up a business."
During the four day camp, students created business plans and delivered them by oral presentation during the end-of-camp luncheon. Presentation and business plan were judged by panel of five judges. Kaylie George of Villa Ridge received the Most Creative top honors for her presentation "Kaylie's Krafts." More...

SCC Named Proctoring Site for the National Healthcareer Association's Billing and Coding Specialist Certification Exam
Shawnee Community College will now be a proctoring site for the National Healthcareer Association's Billing and Coding Specialist Certification Exam.
The mission of the CBCS exam is to promote a high standard of practice among billing/coding specialists and to recognize those who are proficient in the knowledge and skills of procedure/diagnosis coding and claims submission for reimbursement. More...

Shawnee Prepares Students for Accounting and Business Careers
The Associate of Applied Science in Accounting is a two-year curriculum designed to provide the student with entry-level skills for such employment as a bookkeeper or accounting technician. Successful students will have a basic knowledge of accounting as it pertains to payroll, taxes, accounts receivables, accounts payable, general accounting, sales, depreciation, and inventory. Computerized accounting packages, such as QuickBooks and Peachtree, are incorporated into the curriculum. More...

SCC Launches new Forensic Science Program
Shawnee Community College program lineup for the fall includes a new program, Forensic Science. The certificate program is designed to fulfill the emerging need for training and general curiosity in the area of evidence processing and crime scene investigation. Today's law enforcement officer has many new tools available in his/her arsenal to fight crime. This 16 credit hour program introduces those tools and the reality of forensic science and its application in criminal justice. More...

GED Classes Offered Throughout the SCC District
Shawnee Community College continues to offer free GED classes. Shawnee's GED program offers assistance to students in acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to pass the GED examination for a high school equivalency diploma.
All classes are open entry/open exit, and students may enroll any day or night that class is held. Classes include individualized instruction in English, social studies, science, mathematics and the United States and Illinois constitutions. More...

S.M.A.R.T. Option for College Commuting
Shawnee Mass Transit District is a state and federally funded public transportation system. In addition to community transportation services, S.M.A.R.T. provides rides to and from the Shawnee Community College campuses during the academic year.
Regularly scheduled pickup and drop off points are located conveniently throughout the SCC district.
Transit Passes can be purchased at the Information Desk at the SCC Main Campus. A full semester, unlimited ride to and from SCC main campus is $225.

Massage Therapy Education
Shawnee Community College's Massage Therapy one-year certificate program is an intense program designed to introduce the student to the history, current trends, basic theories and techniques of massage. Students explore ethical issues, laws, anatomy and physiology, pathology, and business practices. The students in the program utilize the new massage therapy lab near the fitness center in building L. Throughout the year, the students periodically host open labs; times when other SCC students and the general public are invited to take advantage of seated massages. More...

Scruples International Presentation
Stylist Jesse Koening and Veronica Rogers of Scruples International recently entertained and educated 55 area cosmetologists at the Shawnee Community College's Annual Hair Seminar. The team performed near-magic on a dozen models throughout the day. The SCC Cosmetology department sponsors the annual event.
Seminar participants qualified for seven Continuing Education Units and earned college credit. Current SCC cosmetology students were able to take advantage of the instructional show. More...

Knowles Accepts SCC Honors
Shannon Knowles of Ullin was recently named the Student Support Services Student of the Year. Knowles held several positions as a member of the SCC Student Services including president, student advisory committee member, and public relations officer.
Knowles stepped down in May after completing a year of service as student trustee on the Shawnee community College Board of Trustees. Board Chairman Don E. Patton presented Knowles with an Outstanding Student Service award during the June meeting. More...

SCC Associate Degree Nursing Students Complete Program
Shawnee Community College recently honored students in the Associate Degree Nursing (RN) program with a pinning ceremony, a symbolic welcoming of newly-graduated nurses into the nursing profession. The students followed the tradition of all-white attire and were presented their pins by the trusted nursing faculty members of SCC. The students lit the Nightingale candles and recited the Nightingale pledge. More...

Shawnee Community College sophomore Kendra Simpson of Mounds recently moved up to "the big table" as a student member of the SCC Board of Trustees. Kendra served last year as a member of the SCC Student Senate and will continue serve throughout the coming school year as president of the student organization. More...

A recent Reiki workshop at SCC drew in participants throughout the region, with one participant traveling from Pennsylvania to learn the Reiki technique under the direction of Rita Woods, NCTNB, LMT.

Shawnee Invitational Golf Scramble Earns $7500
for Athletic Scholarships

Clearwave Communications of Harrisburg took the top honors at the Shawnee Golf Invitational in June. The proceeds totaled over $7,500 and will fund athletic scholarships at SCC. The Gambit Golf Course in Vienna hosted the event. The Gambit serves as the home of the SCC men's and women's golf teams. More...

Blakley Brings Archery Gold to Shawnee
Forrest Blakley, of Cobden, competing as the single archer representing Shawnee Community College, won the gold medal and secured the national collegiate championship in the Men's Olympic Recurve competition at the US Intercollegiate Archery Championships in Harrisonburg, Virginia, in May. The event was a registered International Archery Federation, Star Outdoor 70M Olympic Round tournament for recurve and compound archers.
Blakley's precisely placed arrows beat shooters from Penn State, Texas A and M, University of California at San Diego, and the University of California at Berkley in the quarter and semi final rounds to secure the national championship. More...

SCC Recognizes Academic Honor Students
Shawnee Community College recently released the spring 2011 Semester President's and Vice Presidents' Academic Honor student list. Full time students whose grade point average is 3.5 or better and who are enrolled in an Associate degree or certificate program are considered honor students. The President's List consists of students achieving a 4.0 GPA for the Spring 2011 Semester. Students on the Vice President's List achieved a GPA between 3.5 and 3.9. Click here for lists.

SCC GED Ceremony Changes Lives
The Students enter Shawnee Community College’s GED program for many reasons. Some encountered health problems that prevented them from attending classes regularly, while others couldn’t finish for personal reasons, others dropped out because a traditional classroom didn’t meet their needs. More...

Art Exhibit Honors Former Student
The Shawnee Community College art department is honoring 2010 graduate Jessica Marie Patterson with a display of her works. Patterson was involved in a fatal car accident in November, 2010.
She graduated from Goreville High School in 2008 and graduated with high honors from Shawnee Community College in May, 2010. She was attending classes at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale as an Art Education Major. More...

Maxine Russell Recognized for Dedicated Service on SCC Board of Trustees
Maxine Russell of Metropolis was presented with a plaque at the May board meeting in recognition of her time and dedication to Shawnee Community College. Russell has served on the SCC board of trustees since 1993. Russell was the SCC board chairperson for the past two years and will continue to serve on the board. More...

"Celebrating Young Writers at Shawnee" Contest Results
Jenna Ribbing (pictured above) shared her award winning poetry works at the 2nd Annual Shawnee Community College High School Writing Contest award ceremony. Her works, "Poor Boy" and "Sometimes More" placed 1st and 2nd in the 10th and 11th grade poetry division. Ribbing also placed 1st in the Short Fiction division for "The Abyss." SCC art students, Brian Rader and Catie Bunyan were among the students of SCC art instructor Mike Faris who participated in the Shawnee Community College Intercollegiate Art Exhibit. 10th Annual Drama Camp Performance
The 10th Annual SCC Drama Camp was celebrated during the evening performance on Friday. The camp was under the direction of SCC instructor Tim Frizzell, who was assisted by SCC drama performance veterans Bri Hammon, Brad Childress, Dashia Wathen, Kaleigh Grant and Josh Fox.


2011 SCC Basketball Camp

More than 40 area youth participated in the 2011 John Sparks Fun-Da-Mental Basketball Camp this week. Members of the Saints basketball team assisted Coach Sparks throughout the camp. Family and friends attended the awards presentation on Thursday, along with a visit from Bernard, the SCC Saints mascot.

SCC Presents Theatrical Version of "Hairspray"
The Shawnee Community College Performing Arts Center presented the 15th annual spring musical, "Hairspray" under the direction of Tim Frizzell.
The evening and Saturday matinee performances were followed by a "Meet the Cast" event in the atrium. The production was presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials were supplied by MTI, 421 West 54th Street, New York, NY 10019.

Annual H.S. Business Skills Competition Results

100 Percent of SCC Nursing Students Pass NCLEX Exam
For the fifth straight year, the Shawnee Community College Licensed Practical Nursing program boasts a 100 percent pass rate of the NCLEX Licensure exams. Exam results for the 2010 year were recently released, re-affirming the standard of excellence and quality of the SCC nursing program. Faculty, staff, and students were seeing red on Friday, but that's not a bad thing. Shawnee Community College's health training specialist, Steve Ramsey, is pictured with just a few of the Go Red for Women supporters, telling the group, "This is very important, urgent. SCC students Edreco Amos and Laeytn Field discuss the simulation impairment goggles with Illinois State Police trooper Bridget Rice during a break at the SCC Alcohol and Other Drug Workshop. Rice spoke to groups of students on the downward spiraling effects of alcohol and drug abuse on a person's life. She is the District 22 Safety Education Officer.
