Buck Willmes, "If I Can Make It, Anyone Can Make It"
Buck Willmes can't resist telling the story of how a dean at Shawnee Community College told him he would "never amount to anything."
The story unfolds more than 20 years ago after Willmes surprised even himself and enrolled in college. The 1987 graduate of Massac County High School was hesitant as he walked through the doors of SCC, but he now calls it one of the greatest decisions of his life.

Men's Basketball Team Handed First Defeat of the Season
The SCC Men's Basketball team was defeated Tuesday by Rend Lake College, busting their perfect record. The Saints were 6-0 and ranked 8th in the nation going into Tuesday nights game.
COMMENTS FROM COACH SPARKS: Rend Lake came out and took an early lead 10-6. We cut their lead to one at 29-28, but could never get over the hump.

Shawnee Community College Provides Free E-Tutoring
Shawnee Community College has been a leader in online education for several years and now both online and traditional classroom students can access eTutoring through a consortium agreement with The Connecticut Distance Learning Consortium, the college announced today.

Shawnee Remains Undefeated after Crushing Dyersburg State, 108-72
The Shawnee Community College men's basketball team brought home a victory Wednesday night that positions the team to be ranked in the nation's top 10 next week. The Saints are now 6-0.
Coach John Sparks and the SCC Saints learned early Wednesday that the National Junior College Athletic Association had ranked them 14th in the nation before last night's road win.

Children’s Book Drive at SCC
The Shawnee Community College Future Teachers Organization is collecting new and gently used children’s books. Books will be donated to the Care Bears Christmas Project sponsored by the Illinois State Police. Please drop off books by December 14th in the collection box located in the atrium or in office K1107.

Join Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus for a fun afternoon filled with Santa Bags, snacks, and entertainment featuring : North Pole’s Got Talent!
Bear is rockin’ out this Christmas season for a good cause!
Free Admission to both events. Donations welcome! All proceeds are donated to "Bear’s Bears for Kids."

Christmas Cantata at Shawnee Community College
Shawnee Community College's concert choir will perform "Rejoice" on Thursday, December 17th at 7 p.m. The Christmas cantata performance will be in the educational center at the main campus. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend. Canned goods and monetary donations will be accepted at the door to assist those from our community in need during the holiday season.

All eyes are on Coach John Sparks and the SCC Saints as they try to break into the nation's top 15 this week.
Boasting a 5-0 record and averaging nearly 106 points per game, the Shawnee Community College men's basketball team has a shot at breaking into the top national rankings this week.

Spring Registration "Incredible" at Shawnee College
Following a record fall enrollment, registration for spring courses at Shawnee Community College has gotten off to a strong start, college officials say.
In fact, Dee Blakely, dean of Student Services, called the start "incredible."

Paul Echols spoke at the 15th Annual FBI National CODIS Conference recently explaining how DNA put one of the region’s most notorious killers behind bars, and how DNA helped him and other investigators resolve 12 murders involving 3 killers.

SCC Nursing Assistant Course is Changing Lives
In a diverse class of mostly non-traditional students, Shawnee Community College CNA (certified nurse assistant) Instructor Mary Smith is changing lives.
For instance, sitting toward the back of Smith's class at the SCC Anna Extension Center is Linda Rendleman of Saratoga. After seven years of working at a factory job that she thought was a secure, she was called to the front office where she was given a pink slip. Her job was being outsourced to Mexico. Rendleman had been earning nearly $17 an hour.
She had worked for 13 years in housekeeping at a hospital before taking the job she lost. Being unemployed was something new to Rendleman.
