Board of Trustees Meeting September 6, 2007
Recruitment Department Meets Goal of 40 Percent
The Recruitment Department at Shawnee Community College met its goal of 40 percent of all in-district high school seniors starting their college career at Shawnee this fall. As part of the Continuous Quality Improvement program the college participates in, each department must set goals for the following year. After 36 percent of high school seniors came to Shawnee for the fall 2006 semester, Director of Recruitment and Retention Monica Brahler saw this as an opportunity to improve.
“My staff worked hard this year to make sure we had a presence in each high school throughout the semesters,” Brahler said. “We encouraged SCC faculty involvement in the high school classrooms, which really helped. We also met with high school counselors to make sure our in-district students knew the programs and opportunities available to them at Shawnee.” This fall, 270 out of 663 in-district graduates are beginning their classes at Shawnee.

The Student Support Services (SSS) grant at SCC has been renewed for the 2007-2008 academic year. While student financial aid programs help students overcome financial barriers to higher education, SSS helps students overcome class, social and cultural barriers to higher education.
