Scholarship Banquet Planned

The second annual scholarship banquet will take place Thursday, July 12. More than 80 students, along with their guests, are planning to attend the event which will honor their receipt of a scholarship at Shawnee Community College. Scholarships allow students to attend college who would not be able to financially support themselves without help. Scholarships are available based on a wide range of talents and academic abilities. Announcements:
SIU Counselor to Help SCC Transfer Students
To help students who are ready to transfer to a university, SIUC has placed a transfer liaison on Shawnee’s campus. SIUC Transfer Liaison Mary Finley will be available to students 20 hours per week. The Southern Illinois University System Service Center will also be staffed by a current SIUC student when Finley is away.

New Student Orientation Dates Set
All incoming freshmen are invited to attend one of the New Student Orientation sessions before classes begin this fall. The 2007 dates are July 24, 26, 31 and August 2. During these sessions, students will become familiar with the campus, interview a faculty panel, and bond with their fellow students.

Foundation Update
More than 100 participants contributed funds to the Foundation at the annual Golf Tournament in June, raising $8,500 toward student scholarships. The foundation has received 25 applications for the student housing, Saints’ Place, which will open this fall.

Action Items Approved by the Board of Trustees:

• Approved the FY 2008 budget.
• Approved the prevailing wage rates.
• Approved the bid for division I – plumbing, abandonment of sewage ejectors and authorization to begin work.
• Approved the establishment of the SCC Student Book Club.
• Approved the seeking of bids for athletic insurance.
• Approved the extension of lease agreements with Southern Seven Health Department for Buildings A, B, C, and E.

Personnel Items Approved by the Board of Trustees:

• Approved the ratification of employment of part-time faculty/staff for summer semester 2007.
• Approved the employment of Ginger McBride as Alternative High School Learning Center Supervisor. Ms. McBride has previously been employed by the college as an Alternative High School Instructor and an Adjunct Faculty member.
• Approved the employment of Stacy Nicklow of Murphysboro as a full-time, tenure track English Instructor. Ms. Nicklow was previously employed at John A. Logan College as a Term English Instructor and as a Lecturer in the English Department at SIUC.
• Approved the employment of Ruth Ann Levinson of Cobden as a full-time, tenure track physics instructor. Ms. Levinson has 18 years of experience as a Lecturer at SIUC in the Physics and Information Management System departments.
• Approved the creation of new employee classification – Administrative Support Services – change in policies #6310 and #6315
• Approved the re-classification of Sharon Walker as a full-time tenure track instructor.
• Approved the resignation of Lynn Byrd of Cairo as Student Support Services Director.
