SCC Board Honors Dr. Choate

The Shawnee Community College Board of Trustees honored retiring President Dr. Larry Choate at the December meeting by presenting him with a plaque and approving a written resolution of appreciation.
The resolution and plaque were presented to Dr. Choate by Board Chair Wesley Wright. The resolution stated in part, "Whereas Dr. Larry D. Choate has served as President of Shawnee Community College from January 1, 2005 to December 6, 2007, providing exceptional leadership and has accomplished a myriad of important initiatives. It is resolved by the Board of Trustees of Shawnee Community College, District #531, that Dr. Larry D. Choate be commended for his many years of dedicated service to the college district."

Electronic Students Learn Real World Experience
Electronic students recently learned first-hand how to design, build and install an electronic project on campus. The students completed the project with the help of Instructor Craig Bradley. The electronics program at the college has been re-worked to give students the knowledge to succeed in today's market.
Smoke Free Illinois Act Affects SCC
Shawnee will be enforcing the Smoke Free Illinois Act, effective January 1, 2008, around campus. The law states that individuals may smoke on campus, but must remain 15 feet from any entrance to a public place.
Recycling Center to Open Soon
With the help of a $54,200 grant, the college administration, along with PTK students is opening a recycling center for the spring semester. The center will allow the college to recycle all paper waste products, with the addition of ink cartridges and plastic in the future.
High School Musical Auditions
The spring performance will be auditioning students 16 and older to participate in the upcoming "High School Musical" on December 10. The performances will take place February 28, 29 and March 1.
Foundation Dinner Auction Plans Underway
The annual Foundation Dinner Auction, set for March 8, raises funds for student scholarships. The foundation is currently accepting donations for the event.
Action Items Approved by the Board of Trustees:
- Approved the fall 2007 graduation list. Ninety-one students graduated this semester.
- Approved the treasurer's bond.
- Approved the international student admissions processing fee.
- Approved the new student organization, Brothers on the Move.
- Approved the proposed tax levy.
- Approved the resolution of appreciation for Dr. Larry Choate.
- Approved the date of January 12 for a special meeting of the Board of Trustees.
Personnel Items Approved by the Board of Trustees:
- Approved the ratification of employment of part-time faculty/staff for fall semester 2007 and spring semester 2008.
- Approved the executive session minutes to determine continued confidentiality.
- Ratified the sixth president's contract.
