Dr. Fischer was born and raised in southeastern Louisiana near New Orleans. She attended Hammond High School. She began her college career at Southern Louisiana University at the age of 16. She later transferred to Southern Illinois University where she received her BS in Paralegal Studies. She returned to SIU a year later to earn a MS in Plant, Soil and Agricultural Systems focusing on the evaluation of growing media for annual herb production using green roof modular trays. Dr. Fischer continued her education to earn a PhD in Agricultural Studies focusing on agricultural literacy of Illinois elementary school students. She has taught a wide range of agricultural classes, both at the university level and at the high school level.
