Frequently Asked Questions About Interactive Video?

How do I register?

  •   Apply online or via paper application.  Student should receive a letter that the application was received.  If they don’t get a letter, they need to call the admissions office.

  •   Once they have applied, they need to either take the entrance test, or provide proof that they have met the entry level requirements for the class (ACT composite of 21 or better, previous college work as displayed by official transcript, or ASSET/COMPASS scores).

  •   Once they have received their admission letter, they need to make telephone call or e-mail contact with the admissions mailbox admissions@shawnee.cc.il.us . They will be asked to provide either a US post office address to send the registration materials, or a fax number that they can consistently be reached through.  Once the materials (registrations form, previous college work, high school transcript, and/or entrance test scores) have been returned with their signature, we key the information in.

What are Two-Way Interactive Video Courses?

Two-Way interactive video courses are simultaneously broadcast from one site, called the home or instructor site to other sites, the receive or remote sites. Interactive courses are offered over Telephone lines using dedicated T1 lines.   Each classroom has televisions equipped with cameras, monitors, and switching equipment, that allows sites to connect. A variety of programs are offered at the main campus, Shawnee extension centers and networked high schools. Shawnee's network provides two-way audio and video connections that enable students at "remote site" locations to fully interact with the teacher and the students in the "instructor site" classroom, as in any traditional classroom setting.

The Shawnee Community College Distance Learning Network increases the availability of college-level courses to students seeking a degree, expands training opportunities for businesses and meets special needs of the community.  Shawnee has twelve locations at the following sites, two at the Main campus in Ullin and Anna Extension Center and one each at Cairo High School, Egyptian High School, Meridian High School, Shawnee High School,  Metro Center, Vienna High School, Goreville High School, and Electric Energy, Inc.

Two-Way Interactive Video Courses can be located on the master schedule as section 90, 91, or  92. The letter after the section is the location of the Two-Way Interactive Video Classroom.

Can I take courses at other institutions?

Students enrolled at Shawnee have the opportunity to experience classroom interaction with students at other networked colleges. Those schools are John A. Logan, Rend Lake College, Southeastern Illinois College, and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville who is part of SIHEC, also offers courses at various sites that can be taken at Shawnee.  All these member schools belong to either SICCM www.siccm.com or SIHEC.  Shawnee is also proud to be a member of the Illinois Virtual Campus, http://www.ivc.illinois.edu that has a complete listing of Interactive Video and Distance Learning courses in the state of Illinois.  In the near future through advanced technologies, Shawnee will be able to offer, and students will be able to take any available Interactive Video course in the state.

What courses are offered and when?

Courses and locations vary each semester.  Check the current schedule for a listing.  If a course is not offered over the Interactive Video network or certain location, feel free to contact the Distance Learning Coordinator russs@shawnee.cc.il.us  and discuss any options that may be available. Interactive Video courses start and are offered at the same time as traditional courses.

What is the tuition for Interactive Video Classes?

For Shawnee's Interactive Video classes, the tuition is the same an any tradition class.

How do I start my Interactive Video Class?

Shawnee classes start at the same time as the traditional classes. Make sure and check the schedule for dates and times.

Do I ever have to come to the home site campus for an Interactive Video Class?

No. Students are invited to come to the home site and sometimes the teacher will travel to the remote sites, bit it is not required to come to the home site campus.
